Backes sighting

So it's just a normal day at Costco yesterday, then boom. David Backes.

He was very friendly, and talked to my boys a bit when they asked if they could have their picture with him. By chance, my 8-yr-old was wearing his shirt from his gym hockey team (Blues, of course).

Thought you all might enjoy.

I really came into this thread expecting to see a picture of Backes flying a plane on his way to or from saving puppies.

But seriously, that's awesome. Pretty cool moment for you and your boys!

Backes seems like a guy who enjoys this kind of stuff...or at the very least doesn't mind at all to do it.
Very cool.

:okman:

He was very gracious. Didn't seem to mind at all. Even wished my wife a happy Mother's Day. :letsgoblues:

He legitly one of the good guys. He met my daughter at a fund raiser (which she was volunteering at), and her mom purchased a basket of signed items that he donated. Then three months later at the Blues Christmas party, he recognized my daughter as we approached and remembered her name. She was on cloud nine, and I was impressed by his attitude and appreciation to all the fans

But do you have a picture of him with his shirt off?

 8)

But seriously, that's freaking awesome. Stuff like that never happens to me, ever.

Oh, I forgot to mention- the reason we were at Costco was to buy bacon.

Did you have him autograph the bacon?

Was it Roar Bacon?

Also especially cool about this is that Backes, who's clearly not hurting for money and will probably hit paydirt as a FA pretty soon, still shops at CostCo with the working class schlubs such as ourselves. Truly a man of the people.

This kind of stuff just adds to the list of reasons to hope the Blues can resign him somehow.
I wasn't keen on the Blues trying to resign him with the cap the way it is...but with his playoff performance so far and with him being such a good guy, it makes me really want him to stay.

Thought the same thing. Win a couple more rounds, he may have trouble getting his shopping done in the future though...

I hear you, and I've been an advocate for him all season. But dag, this playoff performance is going to net him a monster deal that will likely run until he's 37-38. It's a tough call. Captain the team to a cup and it becomes a lot easier though.

Curt, you as well as anyone should know how valuable a big physical skill guy is. Backes should retire a Blue if at all possible.

I question the likelihood of them being able to, or willing to afford him after this playoffs, especially if they win the Cup. I'd like to think he'll take a hometown discount so he can be around to welcome guys like Adam Musil and McKenzie Maceachern into the fold in a couple of seasons. Those two guys should/could be playing a similar style and similar role that Backes has had, and it would be real nice to have him still here to usher them in and help get them acclimated to playing NHL level hockey.

Oh I do...I just don't know if they can fit him under the cap based on what he wants...which I am sure will be substantial.

Exactly. Being a UFA seriously favors Backes taking whatever he can get from any team, other than the Suck-It Blackhawks, offering.

That's very cool.

Did he have security with him? Can hockey players go shopping around town safely without too many people bothering them?
