Stastny on IR

NHL.com reporting that Stastny has been placed on IR.

I don't know the rules for IR in the NHL. Is he gone for the year like NFL or can he return?

NHL IR is nothing like NFL IR. LTIR means the injury will cause the player to miss 10 games and 24 days minimum. They are free to return after that time frame. Also, while on LTIR, they do not count against the team's 23 man roster limit.

There is one other aspect of LTIR in relation to salary cap (From Cap Friendly):

When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit technically remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates below the salary cap. Instead, LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of relief that the club receives is calculated on the day the player is placed on LTIR. There are two formulas that are used to determine the LTIR relief, the first formula, the basic formula, can be used during the season and during the off-season. The second formula, the training-camp formula, can be used during the off-season.

Basic Formula
This formula is used throughout the season and during the off-season
Amount team can exceed the cap = Cap hit of LTIR player - Amount of cap space available

Training-Camp Formula
This formula can only be used during the off-season
Amount team can exceed the cap = Team cap hit - season salary cap

I wouldn't be surprised. The deadline is still a few weeks off, and it would behoove the team to find a replacement at center sooner rather than later, especially since there is a grand total of 1 point that separates us from a wild card spot right now.

The pickings are thin at center if you want a rental, but if we're to assume Tage Thompson may well make the jump next season, totally possible, then a rental would be the way to go. Maybe Martin Hanzal can be acquired on the cheap, conditional pick and a middle of the road prospect kind of like how they screwed us out of a pick with the Michalek trade.

Exactly. It allowed them to recall Wade Megan which wouldn't be possible if Statsny were not on IR.
