Shit, that darn near tells me the Blues have agreed to terms with Petro, wow.

Washington's 3rd round pick in 2020 and Chicago's 7th. Blues sending their own 7th round pick.
So Allen for a low 3rd round pick and an upgraded 7th. More importantly, no salary coming back it doesn't look like.

If a complete cap hit dump, then you can't complain
there's a boatload of teams with cap problems this offseason

I’d just bet we have a deal worked out with petro and we will see another move shortly before it’s announced.
A 3rd is fine for a salary dump. Good deal for both sides.

JR was buzzkillington on Twitter saying that it was his understanding that the two sides aren't close. Sad

While JR was buzzkillington - that same word was going around the NHL radio analysts yesterday - they have to be getting that info from somewhere.

How will the Jake Allen area be remembered? With a Stanley effin' Cup, that's how! Yeah, I know that he had a very minimal playing role in the playoffs but let's assess: if Jake was just good enough to keep Mike Yeo from getting fired, does this team win the Cup? If Jake was just good enough to keep Binnington on the bench most nights, does this team win a Cup? Allen slotted into the backup role perfectly, by all accounts the perfect teammate. He never bitched about losing the #1 spot, he was supportive of Binner, he stepped up when he was called on without the pressures of being the #1, he really was the consummate professional about the whole thing. The Blues could have dumped on him a long time ago with all his January Jake appearances but they didn't and instead of taking his blocker and all his money and going home he took on his new role perfectly. I ragged on the guy for his midseason meltdowns and the softies he gave up, but there's so many intangibles that you have to pay attention to and it just seems like he was the right player at the right time for the role he found himself in.
Backup next season: Husso or cheap FA signing? Sounds like Army did this in part to give Husso a real fighters chance at the backup slot and I'd be perfectly fine with that.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. Even when his name was mud and everyone was dogging on him for his performance, he never showed the slightest bit of anger or resentment toward the team or fans, never demanded a trade, accepted whatever role the team placed him in.
Best of luck to you Jake.

Yea when Armstrong had the online presser it sounded like he has Husso envisioned as the backup and ONLY if that doesn't work will we go searching for a FA backup. He did say they were looking for a #3 goalie since they don't think Hofer is there yet (not his exact words: complimented him but not sure he's "ready for that role") etc.
I'll remember Jake Allen as a class act dedicated St. Louis Blue who was maddeningly inconsistent at times and turned out to be a very good NHL backup but just couldn't lock down that starter role. I look back on him positively, and with full marks. Nothing but compliments.
I think it was a fantastic trade. We got 2 draft picks and cleared an entire cap hit. That's a win for where this team is at right now.

After my initial excitement passed, I wonder if this is the only move Armstrong makes?
Petro walks, you re-sign Dunn... maybe a FA depth signing or two? The offseason could be done with. Honestly.

If that happens, (petro walks, Dunn resigned) I could see them looking for a vet on a short term deal who can slot on the 2nd/3rd line a la bozak as insurance against tarasenko’s injury and in case kyrou isn’t ready.

I wonder if that's just Army's preferred approach at this point. Maybe that's too harsh. The Blues window to win is obviously right now and regardless of what Petro's deal is going to look like in 4-5 years, you're trying to win NOW and there's no question the Blues would have a void on their blueline the next 2 years without him. *sigh* Sometimes I'm glad I'm not an NHL GM, ha.

There is also G Evan Fitzpatrick who split time between the ECHL last season and most of the prior one in the ECHL. He should be further ahead than Hofer. He's the guy who has taken time to catch up to his level of competition, but been excellent when he catches up. Heck, he won the doggone Memorial Cup, which isn't an easy thing to do.
The big issue - he's hardly getting any playing time. Actually wound up assigned to Brampton of the ECHL. Only played 12 games total last season in the "E". Thing is - this has been his normal pattern. He takes time to adjust. It's going to be a matter of him earning a larger role this pre-season, wherever he winds up, and proving he's earned it by winning - which is a major issue when it comes to minor league teams who also want to win and won't necessarily have the patience to develop a goaltender without some kind of incentive from a parent club.
Hofer is going to have to face the same thing when he moves up.
Just something to consider on the goalie front. Husso should get a longer look as the backup right off the bat - and at least as long a look as Chad Johnson got before Armstrong starts shopping. That should give Fitzpatrick a more realistic opportunity in 'The A'

It's that "taking time to adjust" that worries me about Fitzpatrick. I have no doubt he has the skills to be a competent NHL goalie but if his turn comes up and he stinks up the joint because he hasn't adjusted yet they won't keep him up and wait for him to get used to the level of hockey. I could see him going he route of Binner and taking forever a day to finally crack the NHL but being just fine when he does. Take your sweet time with this kid if you think that highly of him. Between Fitz and Hofer I'm more excited about Hofer, and remember there were two goalies taken in last years draft as well--Colton Ellis in the 3rd round and Vadim Zherenko in the 7th. Let's see how those guys develop over the next few seasons too.
There's no shortage of goalies in the system and if Husso can nail down the backup role there's no reason to rush any of them.

Laughed at MacKinnon in the post-game presser bringing up injuries when the guy who had a hat trick for Dallas in this very same Game 7 was only playing due to Stars injuries. Man up Nathan!!!
