Back up goalie

Post by glen a richter »

Just throwing this out there, we know obviously that Binner will be the #1 next season and beyond that the assumption is Husso will be given every opportunity to be the backup. However... would you consider giving a 1 year contract to Henrik Lundqvist to kind of push both of them to take strides with their game?

I would consider it but likely wouldn't do it. A couple reasons:

1) Husso's new deal is a 1 way. For practical purposes, you're paying him NHL salary to be an AHL goalie then? Void of some call ups.

2) Aren't the Blues kind of spitting in Husso's eye at that point? You've traded Jake Allen, and every single public statement you've made is to give him every chance to be the backup and then you go out and sign one? That's an insult to him I think.

3) I seriously doubt whatever Lundqvist or others would command the same bottom dollar salary that Husso would. And how much better would they be? We don't know.

I don't really see it happening. I think Husso as the backup goalie will be just fine unless it turns out he just lays a big fat egg. And at that point, I'm guessing Lundqvist would already be playing for another team.

The Blues could be the franchise where HOF goalies go to die.
