Blues roster situation - not as complicated as it seems.

Post by theohall »

The following Blues players are emergency recalls:

Brown, Walker, Peca, Joshua, Toropchenko and Lindgren

What does this mean?

#1) whenever Husso is determined to be healthy, Lindgren MUST be returned to Springfield. Even if he were to play 5 more games (which would make him waivers eligible), waivers would not apply.

#2) All of those forwards, Brown included, MUST be sent back to Springfield whenever a Blues forward returns. Yes, the Blues can hold on to Brown as long as a forward is on IR (so keep Neal on IR, please), but the rules are the rules. Waivers won't apply to Brown when the Blues are forced to return him to Springfield.

It seems like a ton of Blues fans have zero understanding of how emergency loans (recalls) work.

The question is once everyone is healthy, given how the emergency call-ups have played, who deserves a longer term shot (Brown) and who should go. Neal is the obvious one to go, no matter how good a locker room guy he is.

You nailed it in the prospects thread. Having the AHL club and the NHL club on the same page is a game changer. It would be a travesty if Brown got sent back and equally a travesty if Lindgren got sent back. Frankly I prefer Lindy to Binnington. Again, the more I see of Binner the more I think he was a one season wonder who just happened to have a helluva one season and cashed in on it. We’ll see if the team, overall, continues the improved play in front of him like they’ve done in front of Lindgren but right now my opinion is that the extension of Binner may have been I’ll advised, at least to the extent he was extended. He’s an average goalie on most days.

Can Husso go back without being subjected to waivers? If he has to clear he won’t so there’s the sole hesitation to keeping Lindgren up unless for some godforsaken reason they want to carry three goalies.

This is the issue - emergency loan. The players on emergency loan must be returned when a healthy equivalent player returns from injury. After they've been returned, then they can be recalled again. This applies to Lindgren, Brown, Walker, Joshua, Peca, and Toropchenko. It's not optional. The Blues can't just say "we are keeping them up because they are playing so well." They have to be returned first before they can be recalled and have a more permanent role on the roster. With Neal out for who knows how long, it will allows the Blues to keep Brown longer, but as soon as the Blues have no one one IR, Brown will have to be returned.

Husso would have to clear waivers, but the Blues could waive him to see what interest is there and then trade him. Yes, a player can be placed on waivers and the waivers "recalled" if someone tries to claim that player in that 24 hour window. That's what they did with Clifford which led to him being traded to Toronto. As soon as Husso is healthy, Lindgren must be returned also, before he could be recalled and given a more permanent role on the roster.
