So that's it then until the draft?

Not necessarily. All the trade deadline really means is any player acquired after the deadline is not eligible to play in the NHL playoffs for the current season. Last year, the Blues acquired Brady Lyle (been in the AHL the whole time) from the Bruins after the trade deadline.

However, there is usually very little movement of NHL players after the trade deadline. So... probably done until the draft.

Vrana at $2.65m for a 7th and some guy seems like the right kind of flier to take. If he works out, great! If not, gone in a year.

If we’re going to retool, and it’s unlikely to get fixed in a year or two, go after those low risk high reward types, short contract types. See if you strike gold. (Or heck, even just a small iron deposit) if it doesn’t work out? Meh. I expect a down year anyways. Roll the dice.

Given what happened with Vrana in Detroit this season - most of the season in the NHLPA assistance program. Comes back. Sent to the AHL for conditioning and didn't even have an assist during the conditioning stint led to Detroit waiving him to extend his time in the AHL. When he was waived, he (via his agent) complained. After being waived and cleared, he actually started playing again. IMO, Vrana is the classic I'll play to get paid, but once I've been paid, screw it, kind of player - like most of the Blues current defenseman. With Kyrou, Vrana, and Kapanen on this team, the Blues D better be ready to play defense without a 3rd man high forward supporting them.

I'm sad to see some of the names go, but it is time to rebuild and start a new core group.

Cool with this move.
There's some upside potential here... low risk too. Only 1 more year on his contract, so he has to prove himself.
Not expecting a ton, but let's see what he can do.
