Future Expansion

Saw Andy Strickland post, with no sources, that there were rumblings about Houston and Atlanta :aaaa: being on the table for possible expansion which got me to thinking a couple of things, one being that there's already about a dozen too many teams in the NHL and another being that Atlanta must be going for the "Third time's a charm" approach.

The only league in North America that could successfully expand virtually indefinitely is the NFL and I think everyone knows that. As far as continuing to expand the NHL, that's nonsense. Relocate some teams, absolutely. Add more? No damn way. As it stands, I think we were very fortunate to be alive during a time that the Blues won the Cup. Assuming every team won one time it could take 32 years for a fan to see their team win it and obviously there's going to be repeat winners in the mix, hell we may never see the Blues win another as long as we live. Greedy ass owners want the payday that comes with expansion but enough already. There has to be a better way.

There isn't enough viable talent to even add one more team to the NHL. Adding 2 and we would wind up seeing Cleveland Barons and Oakland Seals level completely non-competitive teams while diluting the talent of the current NHL overall.

Every time the NHL wants to expand, it seems like the fans are against it.
And this is another one of those times.
I'd rather they not expand. But you know they will... because money.

This site notwithstanding, hockey is easily the #4 or lower of the major sports in popularity. Football and basketball, of course, are kings. College sports and probably NASCAR, I'm sure, are all more popular than hockey at least in America. Baseball with the rule changes they're instituting this season will probably start climbing back up too.

Expanding a league that's not overly popular to begin with is asinine. Especially in Atlanta which failed to support a team twice and Houston, I mean come on now. If they're not planning contraction then the only order of business should be finding a better home for some teams (cough cough Arizona). Right a wrong and move them to Quebec.
