Cards Thread: July 2013

Postby dmiles2186 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 6:51 am

Alright, with my new job, I'm having trouble keeping up with the series threads. So I figured I'll just create a monthly thread, especially since each series thread doesn't have all that much activity in it.

Sweep of the Marlins: good. Got the big (wrong) call in Saturday's game that kept the score 4-2, Cards go on to walk off. Sure, they should be the Marlins, but glad they actually did since they've been struggling as of late.

Wigginton released today. C Rob Johnson called up to give Yadi a little extra rest. I'm pleasantly surprised.

And the Cards traded Boggs to the Rockies. So they purge themselves of Wigginton and Boggs in the same day? That's a good day.

Cards with another sweep. Would be super sick if we could somehow sweep the Cubs as well and head into the All Star Break with a 9 game winning streak.

That would be awesome. I'm going to be in attendance for the Sunday night game with my father in law (Cards fan) and my brother in law (Cubs fans). 2nd time at Wrigley, but first time for a Cards-Cubs game.

I have no idea what Matheny was thinking letting Rosenthal hit with the bases loaded in the 8th. He had already thrown 19 pitches, so to get through the 8th he would have to be efficient. But, more impotantly, don't let your pitcher hit in a 2 run game in the 8th with the bases loaded. Maybe you let Waino hit there if he's throwing a game up 2-0 or 3-1. But, not a reliever. I don't get it.

BUT, awesome bounce back in the 9th. Yadi is a beast.

AWESOME game to be at. I don't know if it came through on TV but there was quite a loud "YADI YADI" chant in the 9th before his homer. Tons of Cards fans there. I was high fiving several after that ball cleared the basket.

Another series win. We didn't play great, but took 2 of 3, so no complaints here. I'm really curious if/what we'll do at the deadline. I'd like to think we'll make a move of some sort to improve a few spots, but I don't foresee anything big. Never know though I guess.

I agree. I think we're a deep enough team as it is. I know pitching is the biggest concern, but most teams can say that. I don't know if I would like us mortgaging the future for someone like, say, Cliff Lee. Some of Mo's best deals have been for bullpen help (Rasmus in '11, Cox for Mujica last year) and haven't included too many big names. I could see us going to that well again.

I've heard Cliff Lee mentioned. He's another one of those "I would love to have him, but I would rather have what we would have to give it by trading for him (both in terms of prospects to the Phillies and inflated payroll)."

If there is a solid 3 starter, that would be nice I guess. It wouldn't cost as much as an ace, but would have a similar effect on the rotation. I don't know if I'm foolish or blindly optimistic, but I'm not as worried about our staff as some.

-I think Miller's struggles are just rookie adversity that he'll overcome. It started right about the time that teams started to get a book on him, so once he makes some adjustments, I think he'll be OK.
-Lynn needs to get his head out of his ass. He's faced some bad luck, but it seems like he's going through a lull like last season. He has the talent to be a solid 3, but the inconsistency is frustrating. I think he'll figure it out again before the playoffs though.
-Westbrook is Westbrook. He's OK as our 4 I guess. I wouldn't mind pushing him out of the playoff rotation though. That's why I wouldn't mind trading for a 3. I think Waino-Miller-Lynn, when pitching well, are fine as a 1-2-3 in the playoffs. Hell, Westbrook is probably fine as a 4 in the playoffs as well if the other 3 are pitching well.
