Re: World Cup

When I was in Italy, I attended a soccer match between Roma and Dynamo Kiev.
It was one of the most unique sporting experiences I've ever had.
All at the same time it was:
Intense
Overwhelming
Scary
Intimidating
Exciting

When we were walking up to the stadium, the national anthem was playing. The stadium was pretty full and EVERYONE was chanting or singing the anthem and rocking the stadium. It was extremely loud and extremely intimidating...and we weren't even in the stadium yet. I felt like I was at Helm's Deep and the orcs were outside, chanting loudly, waiting to go nuts on someone's signal.

It was crazy...but cool.

'Tis. But was just happened with the USA is what makes the World Cup the greatest event in sports. For 2 hours, I sat depressed thinking that I was going to have to wait 4 more years to see USA give it a go only to have them score in stoppage time and send me shrieking like a girl as I ran around the room.
What a freaking game. Can't wait to see the replay when I get home. Many of us had the game streaming in the office. Simply awesome.

To disagree, one doesn't have to be disagreeable.

Never said they aren't great athletes, just that they use their skills in a stupid game.
When they talk about stupid stuff in hockey like enlarging the goal to increase scoring I always argue that a great save is one more display of athleticism. Increasing scoring opportunities is what I'm in favor. And that would help soccer too.

That looked fun. Too bad my celebration at work was ruined by an IM from a guy who could watch it on espn3 while my audio feed was delayed 30 seconds. oh well.

You're saying hockey is more similar to baseball than soccer?
What???

Here you go...

- The playing surface is divided into two halves.
- One team starts on one half, the other starts on the other half.
- The game starts at the center of the playing surface.
- Both teams are defending a goal.
- Players try to get "the object" into the opposing goal, past the other team's defense and goaltender.
- The object of the game is to score more goals than the other team.
- In an overtime situation, a shootout may occur.
- Possession is emphasized and players pass the object around, trying to set up a play where another player can get in good position to try and score a goal.
- The officiating is terrible.
- Penalties are called for infractions during the game which can render a team shorthanded.
- Players often embellish contact (or dive) to draw a penalty.

Which sport am I referring to...soccer or hockey?

You're forgetting something very important Curt---bad haircuts. See: the entire 1994 World Cup. Also: Kane, Pat in 2010 NHL Playoffs, Jagr, Jaromir--pretty much every year.

Loved the game, loved the celebration, could do without that douche in the lower left hand side wasting his beer. He should have to buy a round for the entire bar for that sh*t.

I could understand this a little better... if you weren't a sports fan.

In your youth, did a soccer player beat you up and steal your lunch money or something?
