Agreed. Wireless blows. The only time I use it is with my laptop sometimes.
Give me an ethernet cable over wireless any day. Faster and more reliable.

Have you tried plugging the surge protector into itself?

ViPeRx007 wrote:All I'm trying to do is take a cable from my router and have it connect into a wall jack where I can then plug in ANOTHER cable from there and run it to my PC. It seems simple enough but I can't get it to work. I'm pretty sure the problem is in the wiring of the wall jack, even though that seems pretty straightforward as well. You just match the colors...durrrr. I can plug a cable straight into the same socket, run it directly to a pc and it works fine, so I don't know what the hell.

Anybody have any experience in doing this? Is there some kind of secret to getting these to work?

AWESOME DIAGRAM:

ROUTER--------cable-----------WALL JACK-------------cable---------PC
I'm confuzzled. When you say same socket, do you mean the wall jack or the port on the router?

I've not wired ethernet jacks, but with serial sometimes you do not match colors/pins, you have to cross them like bama I think said. Have you Googled for a proper diagram?
Trust me, I'm confuzzlededed as well.

All I'm saying is that I can do this, like almost everybody does, and get a signal...

MODEM ----> ROUTER ------> PC

But if I try to do this I get nothing:

MODEM ----> ROUTER ------> Wall Jack ------> PC
Either the jack is wired incorrectly or the cable (in your wall I presume?) is damaged.

You must. Otherwise I'm not sure how you could navigate a keyboard as well as you do.

It depends on the situation, I've got 2 laptops and 3 desktops here. The laptops are wireless because they get moved around a lot, one desktop is near the router so is wired, the other 2 are about 4m or so away but across a floor space. Since this is a rental unit and I don't really want to have a wire laying across the floor all the time they've both got wireless cards in them. The only other device is a network harddrive which is literally next to the router so is wired.

Well, I got it to connect but I can't get on the internet.

Basically the PC is receiving the info from the router (i get an ip address and all that good stuff), but can't seem to send anything back through the wiring I did.

I know it isn't anything wrong with the PC because I can connect it directly to the router and everything fires up fine. That tells me that the wiring is closer but not completely right.

Any suggestions?

A cheap jack. I bought a different brand and it connected, however I couldn't access the internet. I just had to jam the wires down a little more to make sure they were all getting good contact and then it worked fine.
