USB Problem

The whole Mac/PC thing has reminded me of my current computer issue:
When I plug in my USB cord for my MP3 player (which I have been using for a few years with NO problems), I get an error message about a power surge occurring. (My MP3 player runs on a 1 GB memory card, the really skinny small ones)
I've researched for hours about how to fix this. All I can get is to buy a powered USB cord. I thought, well okay. Since my memory card is removable (since my MP3 doubles as a storage device), I bought a mass storage USB connector to try to put my files on the memory card THAT way before I try the powered USB.
No such luck. I got the SAME problem. Oddly enough, the USB port will run everything BUT memory cards. (mouse, keyboard, flash drives). So I tried the other USB ports and they are all giving me the same problem with my damn MP3 and the new device I purchased.
All my USB ports are functioning correctly. I could understand the MP3 cord being old/broken, but the fact that the NEW item I bought won't work is a brain buster to me. My USB's are all current.
