I know a pretty good deal about death metal, and I used to like it, kinda...

Now, I can't stand it. 99% of it is just pure garbage.

OK, I updated the first post with some new choices towards the bottom and some decisions on other states. Another tough state to decide is going to be Massachusetts. Possible bands, some of which have already been mentioned:
Godsmack
Dropkick Murphys
Boston
Aerosmith
The Cars

I'm leaning towards Aerosmith.

Based on that list, even despite their most recent years (decades), it would be hard not to go with Aerosmith.

Boston for sure. Godsmack should be nowhere near that list, or even this thread. That band (Franking) sucks.

I can't believe Godsmack is still around, honestly.

Then again, most modern rock or whatever you want to call it sucks dick.

To a point, I agree with you. For a lot of the best modern edge rock bands or metal or whatever you want to call it- you have to dig. A lot. The stuff that usually gets played on radio is the softerish 3 Doors Down alternative rock or corporate monsters that consistently put out good songs but don't really make anyone more interested in the genre (Three Days Grace/Godsmack, etc)

Try this internet radio station- 525 power tracks. Just google it and you cant miss it. Some of the best and lesser known new metal bands are on there and they literally DO NOT play crappy stuff. (well, mostly  ) They take mostly requests from a restricted playlist but even then sometimes they skip songs if they don't think they're particularly good. Here's some of the better new bands if you're interested. I just grabbed myspace profiles cause that was the easiest.

Destrophy

Allele Single: Stitches

Disonic Single: Grain of Sand

Evans Blue Single: In a Red Dress and Alone

Hourcast

Maybe you'll like some of it, who knows...

Just out of curiosity, what kind of music do you like?

Pretty much a little bit of everything. There's even some metal that I do like, just not the stuff that sounds like a constipated demon "singing" in a never-before-heard foreign language.
