Series Thread: Padres @ Cardinals
Thu 7/17 Peavy, RHP (7-5, 2.47) vs Lohse, RHP (11-2, 3.39), 7:15 CT
Fri 7/18 Maddux, RHP (3-8, 3.90) vs Looper, RHP (9-7, 4.25), 7:15 CT
Sat 7/19 Wolf, LHP (6-9, 4.66) vs Wellemeyer, RHP (7-4, 4.04), 2:55 CT
Sun 7/20 Baek, RHP (2-5, 5.25) vs Garcia, LHP (0-0, 0.00), 1:15 CT
Yaaaa! A series when the Cardinals face more righties than lefties.
First matchup looks like promising pitching duel. The rest - depends on if the Cardinals pretend Maddux isn't superman and won't beat them no matter how old he happens to be; Welly should get his 8th win; and then there is the final matchup with Garcia.
I'm still not convinced Garcia is ready with the way he pitched in relief. Looked nervous, pitch location seemed erratic and several of them stayed too high. I'll be surprised if he gets through 5 innings. Fortunately, the Padres only have two regulars hitting near .300 so that should help. Also, fortunately, Baek hasn't done much for the Padres. His ERA in last 10 was 4.80, but in the last 8 (in other words his NL ERA) is 5.27.

The Cards have to start winning at home. I think we can take 3 of 4.

Cubs have a chunk of road games coming up.
Time to make up a little ground.

It was almost like Franklin needed a few batters to get in gear. But whatever...a win is a win.
4 games out.

Re: Series Thread: Padres @ Cardinals
Cards have got to do a better job of scoring guys who get on base. They can't keep relying on solo homers. (Maybe they can, but that usually dries up after awhile).
Let's see which Cardinals team shows up tonight - the "we can't beat Maddux" team or the one that realizes he is a struggling older pitcher and hits the crap out of him.

Nice offensive win and Izzy closed it out.

Nice win tonight with the offense coming through big time. Not really surprised Looper didn't last long since his last two outings were both 100+ pitch starts. Thompson has been solid since rejoining the team.

Awesome game last night. When I woke up Friday I had no idea I'd be at a Cardinals game in the evening. Neither did the three other dudes I went along with. The father in law got tickets from the step daughter's high school friend and we assembled a crack-crew and got down to the ballpark just in the nick of time.
29 hits - 18 runs, 4 homeruns: lots of action. Decent seats, sect 255 - it was the first time I sat out of the lower bowl.

Glad you got to see a good one, Marco!
On to today: Didn't get to see any of this thanks to the wonderful deal Fox has with MLB which prevents anyone on the East coast from seeing Cardinals games if they aren't playing an East coast team in their "national" coverage - the bastards.
Anyway - looks like Welly had a rough start, then a solid recovery. The bullpen had a horrible start and got saved by Villone. Then Franklin had an interesting 8th and a shutdown 9th. Big news - Pujols exploding. Woohoo! Way to go, Albert!
On to tomorrow and the Jaime Garcia experiment. This game concerns me because everyone in the pen, except Jimenez, has pitched over the last two games.

Nice to see Pujols get 4 rbi's. We've won 3 of 3 so far.

Saw the highlights while out tonight and Giles catch in RF on what would've been another run-scoring double for Pujols was amazing.

It was Glaus who Giles robbed. It would have been nice to get those extra 2 runs with the way our bullpen has performed, but it worked out anyway.theohall wrote:Saw the highlights while out tonight and Giles catch in RF on what would've been another run-scoring double for Pujols was amazing.

Aaron Miles channeling his inner David Eckstein with the walk off grand slam!
We blew another save, but at least we won. And a 4 game sweep! We swept!

Garcia scared the heck out of me with that first inning. Then, he did well enough thru the next 3, but there were way too many balls thrown in the dirt, which could've cost him more in the 5th when one got away had he not "grooved a fastball" to the pitcher. I don't care who his hitting. A flat fastball with no movement, chest high is a giveaway HR no matter who is hitting. Which is what Miles knocked out with the walk-off grandslam to win it
Garcia needs some serious tutoring or he's going to get hammered against a better hitting team.
Izzy is done. Time for him to hang it up as a closer - even if he is only 8 away. The curveball which had been eluding him and was the reason for the DL/re-hab stint still isn't fixed. Hanging curveballs were what got him knocked out of the game.
TLR has some serious cajones pinch-hitting Yadi for Thompson with AP on 3rd, 1-out and essentially no one in the 'pen (based on everyone had pitched last night or today).
Ryan Ludwick should NEVER be hitting in the #3 slot. He's horrible there. Anywhere, but there and he's hitting very well.
Still can't believe the Padres walked Yadi and Schu to pitch to Miles, who is arguably the Cardinals best hitter over the past month.

Seeing decisions like that might 'splain how SD is in last place of the worst division in Baseball, huh?theohall wrote:Still can't believe the Padres walked Yadi and Schu to pitch to Miles, who is arguably the Cardinals best hitter over the past month.
