Did the Cardinals medical staff get their MDs in Laos?
Seems this season every pitcher that is supposed to come back from injury and contribute winds up re-injuring within weeks. Carpenter, Mulder, Izzy, and watch Wainwright last about 3-4 games before he's back on the DL. Carpenter had what like one crappy minor league start before they decided to bring him in for the big show? And I don't think Mulder did much before they threw him in too. At some point you have to wonder if they're pacing them properly or just throwing them in there b/c they want wins and are hoping for the best.

Carpenter had 2 rehab starts. I think they did ok with him. I think his latest injury has everything to do with not pitching much in the last year and a half.
As far as the other players. I don't think the med staff is doing very well with figuring out how to rehab injuries.

This isn't just this season...I've long had concerns about the medical staff.

Nobody knows what goes on behind the scenes, but I doubt the Cardinals are to blame for these problems.
He's also been injury prone over his entire career, even before he came here. Unfortunately, it looks like he's just one of those pitchers who is going to get hurt from time to time.
So I don't know if the Cardinals staff is really to blame.
He didn't overextend himself in any of his starts after he was activated from the DL. What's the difference if he throws 5 innings in the minors, or 5 innings up here? He pitched extremely well and didn't go 8 or 9 innings or throw 120 pitches.
It's a minor setback as far as I'm concerned.
Are the Cardinals to blame? I dunno. Maybe...maybe not.
It's probably better that he is hurt and isn't playing...he really sucked the last season he was healthy and our starters have been pretty good. I doubt Mulder would have pitched better than our top five.
And his past injuries are mainly his hip. He has chronic arthritis in his hip and it's held together with glue and duct tape. Izzy was told his rebuilt hip wasn't going to last more than a few seasons, and he had that major hip surgery almost three years ago.
He has a bad hip. I wouldn't say that is the Cardinals fault.
I think his career is over.
If it's his finger again, then maybe they rushed him back. If it's an injury unrelated to his finger, then how is that the Cardinal's fault?
Mulder is a lost cause.
Maybe he came back too soon...but hell, wasn't he out for almost a year?
Is it any coincidence that Mulder, Zito and Hudson...all Oakland pitchers a few years ago, are either hurt or really struggling now? A lot of people say they were overworked in Oakland and aren't surprised they are having problems later in their careers.
Some have been saying over the past couple years that Mulder was damaged goods when we got him.
Is it the Cardinals fault he's hurt now? I dunno. But I wouldn't jump to that conclusion without some proof.
I don't think Carpenter's recent injury had nothing to do with his previous injury.Mellanby_equals_grit wrote:Carpenter

I'm clueless on Mulder. He has serious problems and his career might be over.Mulder

His recent injury is tendonitis. I'm not sure what causes that. Is it a case of shit happens, or are the Cardinals to blame for that? I have no idea.Izzy

He had two minor league starts and his first start back with the team was a short one, so that may as well have been a rehab start. His second one he didn't go deep either. They took it slow with Carpenter and treated his first couple starts off the DL as rehab starts.Carpenter had what like one crappy minor league start before they decided to bring him in for the big show?
Mulder had a number of rehab starts if I remember correctly...he started well, but then started sucking it up and got hurt again. And I don't think Mulder did much before they threw him in too.

They have millions of dollars invested in their arms and you would hope they wouldn't be rushing people back. It's not in their best interest long term.At some point you have to wonder if they're pacing them properly or just throwing them in there b/c they want wins and are hoping for the best.

Curt, I didn't know you did PR for the Cardinals TOO.

Just talking you off the ledge.Mellanby_equals_grit wrote:Curt, I didn't know you did PR for the Cardinals TOO.
I just don't think the Cardinals are necessarily to blame for some of the injury troubles to the pitching staff. Too many other factors went into some of these injuries.
Could the Cardinals be to blame? Maybe.
Are they to blame? Eh, I doubt it.
Carpenter was supposed to be back maybe before the all-star break...but he didn't make it back until weeks later because of a phantom setback that wasn't really a setback.
And Wainright was out a bit longer than they thought he would be.
It's not like these guys are predicted to be out 6-8 weeks and they come back after 4 weeks. If anything, they've been out longer than initially projected.
Now, as far as the rehab workouts and whatnot that the Cardinals have them do before they get into "game shape", I have no idea. But I really doubt they are doing anything drastically different than any other team and how they would bring back a pitcher from an injury.
That's just an educated guess though.
