Let's Go Blues

I know that I'm not the only bass player here. I need some help in picking my new set of bass strings. I'm using a Fender P-Bass with Seymour Duncan pickups, and I like muddy/Black Sabbath-ish tone. I've always liked GHS strings, but the last set I bought were Ernie Ball Power Slinkys. They sound kinda tinny, even after a couple months of regular play. I had heard a lot of bad things about Ernie Ball, but the heavy E string pushed me in their direction. I'm self trained (aka-full of bad habits), but I've heard that most people prefer D'Addario strings. So...any suggestions?

It's just going to be personal preference. I used Ernie Ball strings for years and loved them. Then I switched to D'Addario's and those were fine too.

Most brands have a "high top heavy bottom" set, at least for guitar. I always used the D'Addario set that was .52 through .10 (guitar of course)

For drop tunings, I would put that same set on my Les Paul but buy a .58 or .59 separately for the low E. I'd tune down to A on a few songs.

In my experience, the D'Addario strings were really good.

Search online for what Geezer prefers. Do you know he used to live here in Chesterfield with his wife?

Not bass, but on guitar I swear by DR. I went through a few brands until I fell in love with the tone of them. They seem to need less time to stretch and stay in tune as well.

I agree with SIULaw -- DR strings are the best. I usually buy the cheapest though.

If Kmeyer makes an appearance he could help out.

I've used D'Addario's for about 4 or 5 years now, and they definitely deliver a solid sound for me, especially for playing metal. I tend to like the heavier gauge strings, for they deliver more power, plus they build finger strength up quite well, and D'Addario's have always had some heavy strings. I know their hybrids have a heavy E and A, with a lighter D and G. I played strictly those type of strings for about a year.

More expensive, but last longer. I have High Beams on both my 5 strings.

You may also like RotoSound strings. Might have more of a Sabbath vibe.

I've always liked the 606 Superwounds, now PSD, they make. Boil them once a month and they'll last for a year.

I've had Primus' Tales From the Punchbowl in my car changer for the past couple of weeks.

If you haven't heard it already, he does some awesome work on three tracks of Adrian Belew's Side One. Danny Carey (Tool's drummer) takes care of the drums on those tracks as well.

Very underrated Primus album, maybe my favorite! My wife still hates them for some reason. They actually played Tommy the Cat on the radio the other day when we were driving around and at the end she gave a vehement "NO" to Les' question at the end, "hey baby, do you wanna lay down with me?"
