Is NHL '94 special?

Why is it that it is always a selection for controls in the EA NHL games? I am not sure if I have ever played '94 before, but was it a ground breaking game or something?

It was the first to have both NHL and NHLPA licensing. "NHL Hockey" was released in 92 and obviously had the NHL licensing, and "NHLPA 93" was obviously with NHLPA. There was a bigger leap between "NHL Hockey" and "NHLPA 93", both by EA than there was between 93 and 94 in my opinion. NHL 94 was the first to offer a shootout, onetimers, penalty shots, and a few other things. No fighting and no blood, though.

It was a great game, no doubt about it.

Edit: Plus, it was the first NHL game that was heavily marketed, if I remember correctly.

Nope, that was NHL All-Star Hockey.

NHL 94 is one of the reasons I got into hockey. I still play it from time to time on the 'ol emulator.

Breakfasts come and go, Renee, but Hartford, "the Whale," they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime.

 Classic

Same here. It is a classic game, and it made me hate the (Franking) Hawks. I like the interludes from the other games being played during the intermissions while the zamboni goes across the screen. I never understood how players could be on two teams at the same time though, like Guy Herbert.

NHL 94 rocked. Probably the most fun I've ever had playing video hockey...and I've owned 92, 94, 96 and every one since.
I played the crap out of NHL 94.

Rob Brown for the Hawks was absolutely unstoppable on 94...like a freaking tank out there...you couldn't knock him off the puck. Pair him with Jeremy "Spoke in" Roenick, and they were a pain in the arse...

NHL 94 was also the first game to offer One-Timers as I recall...

NHL games these days try to do too much... this game wasn't necessarily all that realistic.... but damn was it fun......

This is the reason I haven't played a game heavily since NHL 2002.. Once I had to start controlling the goalie I was no longer amused.. I liked skating around trying to fake people out to score goals. They tried to make games more realistic and whenever that happens in video games you're probably gonna have to sacrifice fun.

That game was awesome- still had the Nordiques and the Jets on it yet new enough teams like the Senators, Panthers and Ducks were on it. My first hockey game I believe.

And the ability to play as the goalie in that game has not been beaten by any other game since.
