Drats. I'm using AVG for virus protection & am pretty comfortable with it. Any suggestions as to a good site to get a computer 'scrub'?

Thanks Gup! Looks like I may need to purchase more memory too.

Finally...an update on the spambot war!!!
Measures have been implemented to prohibit spambots from registering and posting on the forum.

Let's see if this works.

Cross your fingers fellas. :okman:

Don't you fear that the spambots will one day send a bot back in time in order to kill you before you are even born?

There is a phpBB hack for that. The forum will text me if that ever happens so I am not caught off guard.

I just noticed a couple new spambot posts.
At first I was like, WTF?!?! But then I realized this particular spambot had registered before I implemented the spambot fix...so he was already in the system and therefore was able to make posts.

I guess I'll have to look for spambots who registered but are laying dormant. :?

Pretty messed up that the spambots have sleeper cells.

you can tell who many of the spambots are just by the website they link to in their profile. and there sure are a lot of them...

why not just delete users with 0 posts?

I got a day job and my nights are filled with life. If I had nothing else to do, it could be done since that would take several days to do.

I wouldn't want to delete all users with '0' posts. Some would be legit users who just haven't posted yet.

Screw it.
I just mass deleted every user with zero posts. It took a while to process...but it's done. I'm sorry if someone's account was deleted in the process, but I'm tired of dealing with spam.
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=27364

The only spambots that may still exist, are those that may have posted something that slipped by us and their account hasn't been deleted yet. It shouldn't be many at all, if any.
And we shouldn't get any new spambots for a while...at least until the latest spambot deterant I installed starts to fail...which hopefully won't be until next season or later.

Them spambots is sneaky.

I'm going to miss perusing the list of users with 0 posts and their crazy names :P

There were some classic ones - I always enjoyed people who chose names like JeffFinelyRules or TurekRocks and then never posted.

It looks like those who were seeing spam on the home page were not crazy.

Today, it was pointed out to me that in the source of the home page there were a bunch of spam links.
They didn't show up in any browser I tried, but if I looked at the source, the links were there. A bunch of 'em. I had checked the source before when people were saying they were seeing spam on the home page, but nothing was there. Which was odd.

So yeah, sorry about that guys.

But at any rate, it's been removed.
If it happens again, I may look into a different blogging script to insert into the site. This one may not be secure.
