Sold My Car

Post by cprice12 »

Does this seem strange to anyone else?

I put my car on craigslist late on Tuesday night.
I started getting responses immediately...and by the next morning I had a dozen inquiries...and by the end of the day on Wednesday I had over 20.

One by one as the emails came in, I told people that I'd be home at 5:30 on Thursday night and they were welcome to come by anytime after then, as long as they called first.

Some of the people were begging me to not sell the car until they could come see it. One guy even offered me more money to not sell it until he got there.

I didn't understand the massive interest in my car. It was a 2-door black 1998 Pontiac Sunfire SE Coupe...and I was asking $1300, which is approx. what Kelley's Blue Book valued it at...it fit inbetween KBB's "Fair" and "Good" category...but probably more in the "fair" range. It ran quite well, it always had, but the paint was faded pretty bad in some spots and had started to show some rust on the bottom corners of the doors. The thing was 11 1/2 years old.

So two cars pull up right at 5:30 on Thursday (right when I told people I'd be home). In one car was a husband, wife and daughter...the other was just one guy. The family talked to me first. They looked the car over for 5 minutes, asked me a couple questions...then came over to me and said, "we're willing to offer what you are asking". And then he looks at the other guy who was there, like he was expecting him to offer more money and start a bidding war. So the other guy left. The family then handed me $1300 in cash. I signed the title over to them, and they drove it off. But here's the deal...they didn't even start the car before buying it. They didn't start it, they didn't test drive it...they barely looked at it. I even said, "Don't you guys want to test drive it?"
They said "nope...looks good."
The whole process took like 10 minutes.

I felt a little bad for the guy who was by himself. He was waiting to look at it but the other family bought it right away. And he looked a bit pissed at me, like I wanted them to both show up at the same time so they could bid on it...which wasn't the case. They just happened to show up at the same time.

Am I missing something here?
Would anyone here ever hand over $1300 in cash to buy an 11 year old car from a private party without even starting it up???

I got a handful of calls for the next couple hours about the car and people wanting to stop by to see it and I had to tell them it was sold.

What is the deal with this car? I was asking what it was valued at...and I even would have taken less for it.
It just all seemed weird to me....like this car was secretly lined with gold or something and people couldn't wait to buy it.

What's the lesson here? You could have probably made a lot more money. Set the prices high.

It took me months to sell my truck on craigslist. I need to have Curt write my ad for me next time, damn.

Probably. Had I known that going in, I would have asked for at least a few hundred more.
But I really just wanted to get rid of it. The insurance policy was up for renewal in a couple weeks...and I didn't want to mess with renewing it. The fact I got what KBB said it was worth is fine by me.

I mean maybe it's just the economy. Any chance to get a car on the cheap and people drool.

Or maybe it has to do with Pontiac going out of business people are getting all whacko nostalgic for Pontiacs??

If I listed something on Craigslist I'm always inclined to pad the price because everyone on there is always trying to lowball you in the worst way. I'm shocked you got what you asked for so fast.

I was expecting this to be a Nigerian scam post.

I've only sold two things on craigslist....my house and my car.
And both sold very quick.

Here's the trick to craigslist, or at least what I think works...
- Always, always, always post photos. I don't even look at postings if they don't have photos.
- Post the maximum amount of pictures (4).
- Make sure they are good, clear photos.
- Give a lot of info.
- Don't overvalue your item(s) too much.
- Always respond to everyone that contacts you.
- If you can, post a link to more photos hosted elsewhere, or better yet, do what I did and create a website or webpage dedicated to the selling of the item and then link to it from craigslist. We posted a lot of info about our house on craigslist and we also linked to my website where we had videos, tons of photos, tons of info, etc. about the house. I did it up real nice. I did something similar with the car...but it wasn't as involved. If it's a big item (car, house, boat, etc.), the more effort you put into it, the easier it will sell. People are impressed by a nice looking presentation and are more likely to trust you and pursue the purchasing of your item. A nice presentation can easily validate the amount you are trying to sell the item for, or even make people think they are getting a good deal.

Most of that is common sense, but a lot of people don't put forth any effort in their photos or the listing information, and that hurts the effectiveness of listing.

I thought about that. However, the guy who bought it, bought it for his teenage daughter...so...

Well, after all of the emails & phone calls I was getting, I knew I was going to get what I was asking.
And I did pad it a bit since I was willing to take $1100 or so for it. Like I said, mainly, I just wanted to get rid of it.

Reminds me of the time we had to sell my dad's '69 Dodge Charger. We put a small add in the classified section of the Belleville News Democrat, and by noon of the day that our add first appeared our answering machine was completely full. Some guy came by a few hours later with a tow truck ready and everything (The Charger was in really bad shape, not safe enough to drive) and payed us alot more than we listed it for.
