I'm a) bored, and b) at work, so I ran it on my iPhone and got 1.47 Mbps down and .35 up. Ping was 391 ms. Go me.

Not bad for a home connection. And you jokers think I still ride a horse to work and plant corn seeds all day.

What I'm shocked at is that Charter's tentacles spread to Billings, MT. But I guess they couldn't pass up a town with a name like that...

It's pretty much the same as the New York version. The only real difference is that Manhattan, MT's population is ~1600 people, which is a mighty 0.001% of Manhattan, NY's population.

We had a local company named Bresnan up until the last few years. Bresnan was then bought by Optimum and Optimum was just bought by Charter probably 1-2 years ago. I can't really complain. The prices haven't really changed and the internet speeds have gotten better. I'm just not super comfortable with the monopoly they have here now.

Our connection at home using Clearwire Broadband, sucks so bad.
Image

So I use my Android phone Goodness on Verizon's network and tether the connection to my home PC and get this:
Image
...so if we need the speed, we can get it.

But...a recent development has us hopeful...
Wisper Broadband (wisperisp.com) is supposed to be installing an antenna on our neighbor's silo in a couple weeks, which will allow folks around here to get better broadband. And since we'll have line of sight, we should pretty much get the advertised speeds, or so we're told. But we'll see.
The speeds aren't stellar, but we can get up to 20mb down. We'll probably go with their 10mb down and 2mb up package since it's more affordable...which is about 4-5 times faster than our current ISP, for about the same price...$55/mo. Their 20mb package is almost $100/mo. So yeah...nope.
I was also told by Wisper that it is true unlimited data...no throttling or caps.

I don't know how you guys with >5 Mbps survive. Can you even reliably stream netflix/gamecenter in HD at that speed?

I have Charter and was stuck on 15Mpbs forever, even after they claimed they upgraded me to the 30Mbps service. They kept giving me the bullshit excuses that there's traffic, I am sharing bandwidth with others, etc. Then I got the new Spectrum modem, and an e-mail saying I should get 100Mbps now. Guess what? 15Mbps, and that's it. After several calls that went nowhere, the last time I called I got connected to a lady that said "Oh, well your modem has not been provisioned to the new speed." Then she did something (waved a magic wand, ate a pb&j sandwich, I have no clue), reset the modem remotely, and BAM, I was pulling down over 100Mbps on speedtest.charter.com. I was skeptical, so I tried on speedtest.net - same thing.

Anyway, so it seems that there are some customer svc reps at Charter who know their stuff but most don't or don't want to deal with it. But I thought I'd share in case some of you are wondering why the heck your speeds are not up there with the rest of Charter customers.

So Wisper finally got their antenna installed on our neighbor's barn and we signed up right away. They installed it on Friday.
The package we signed up for is 10mb down and 2mb up...unlimited data, no throttling.
Every speed test we do gets about the same:
Image

That is 3-4 times faster download speed that we got with Clear...and about 15 times faster upload speed...which is great.
No, 10mb down and 2mb up isn't near as fast as you Charter folks...but it is much faster than our last ISP, and it is fast enough to browse quick enough, stream video with no problem, and we can actually upload things now without tethering my phone...and when my wife uploads her photography work to clients, it's so much faster.

We're happy campers now...finally. :okman:

So...Wisper, ISP out of Belleville gets a thumbs up from us. The speeds we get are pretty much at advertised speeds because we have line of sight to the antenna though. If you don't have line of sight, your speeds won't be quite as fast. But they do have faster packages...but it's like $80/mo for 15mb down and 3mb up. But I didn't think that was worth an extra $25/mo.

Just installed a new modem that Charter said I needed. Uhh, it seems to have helped. I'll take a slight dip in upload speed for double the download speed:

I get the advertised 100mb speeds, but my wireless router is pretty ancient. It cuts it in half (and probably doesn't help that it's in the basement either)

I keep waiting to buy one of those Netgear Nighthawk routers and move it to the main floor.

That's the router I have. It's pretty bombtastic. That's not a word, but fits in this case. It has good range. My house is 4 levels (before I get yelled at, it's not big, and I'm not bragging. It's a normal, middle-class house, it's just built in a way that it has a bunch of levels). Anyway, I have the router at the bottom level and it works perfect at the top. Ideally I'd move it up but that's where the modem is and it all works good enough for me, so whatever. I can stream music, etc. from outside in my yard just fine as well.

I'd definitely recommend it.

We have the Buffalo N600 Airstation.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833162070

It's a really good router. It's a couple years old or so. They have a newer version of it out now without the antennas. It gives us advertised speeds from our provider and I can still connect about 150 ft down our driveway...and that is without adjusting the antennas. It is mounted on the wall in our garage near our breaker box. Upstairs and downstairs reception is good inside the house as well. I think I've only had to reset the thing two or three times in the two years we've had it.

Previously we had the infamous Linksys WRT54G. We had that thing for seemingly 10 years. But then it started having issues where we'd have to reset it every few days...so we switched to another Linksys router that promplty got fried from a power surge or lightning strike, and now we have the Buffalo.
