We're one minute further away from nuclear annihilation.

The infamous "Doomsday Clock," measuring the likelihood that civilization will be toppled in a human caused cataclysm, was moved from five to six minutes to midnight Thursday by a group of international atomic scientists.

Citing the efforts of world leaders to reduce their countries' nuclear arsenals and global efforts to curtail climate change, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced the news at a news conference in New York.

"We are poised to bend the arc of history toward a world free of nuclear weapons," the board said in a statement. "For the first time since atomic bombs were dropped in 1945, leaders of nuclear weapons states are cooperating to vastly reduce their arsenals and secure all nuclear bomb-making material."

The group, which includes 19 Nobel Laurietes, has adjusted the clock only 18 times since it was launched in the midst of the Cold War in 1947. It was moved to five minutes to midnight in Jan. 2007, because of concerns over nuclear proliferation and terrorism.

The group's executive director, however, warned there could be plenty of doom and gloom on the horizon.

"The emerging trends in international cooperation will provide a basis for collaborative problem solving for a safer world," said Kennette Benedict. "But a handful of government officials, no matter how bold their vision will not be able on their own to deal with the threats to civilization we now face."
