Holiday OUT!

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday will undergo an appendectomy today.

Holliday, who hit a solo home run in the opener, went home after the 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Padres and began feeling pain.

The team medical staff examined him and will perform the operation today.

Recovery time is generally 4 to 6 weeks before any "strenuous activity" can begin.

In 2010, Holliday was the only National League outfielder to finish in the top 10 in batting average (.312), on-base percentage (.390) and slugging percentage (.532).

This spring, Holliday hit .345 and got off to a strong start in Thursday's opener, going 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs.

Without Holliday, the Cardinals have four outfielders on the current roster: Colby Rasmus, Lance Berkman, John Jay and Allen Craig.

No decision has been made yet on a roster move.

bleh, this totally sucks. Time for Jay and/or Craig to prove that the people that once hyped them weren't totally wrong. I remembered being ~disappointed when Bonilla pulled his hamstring, but that worked out for the best. Obviously I don't think an aging Bonilla is the same as Holliday in his prime, nor do I expect Jay or Craig to turn into the next Pujols. But, sometimes an injury allows somebody to prove themself when they otherwise wouldn't have the chance.

What the hell do they put in the water in St. Louis??? Cards injuries piling up as fast as Blues injuries? Wainwright and now Holliday. Bet Pujols is next.

haha, maybe we'll sign Pujols to a reasonable contract afterall.

Maybe then they can get a 1st baseman who doesn't put up 0-5 afternoons, damn slacker haha.

I still bet you he'll sign with Washington in the offseason, but I kid about the 0-5. He'll hit his usual .330+, 40 homers, 120 RBI

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet he could even come back sooner. Didn't TJ have this done and he was back skating in like 3 days or something?

I heard that too. It seems optimistic, but if Matt Cassel can do it . . .
