Top 10 Video Games of All Time (your list)

Post by STL JA »

I'm just curious to see what kind of lists you all come up with. I was originally thinking, "Name your top 5", but that is just too hard. Honorable mentions at the bottom are fair game. Lets begin...

1.) Mortal Kombat II (arcade)
2.) Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3.) Final Fantasy VII
4.) Super Mario Bros. 3
5.) World of Warcraft
6.) Counter-Strike (pre 1.6)
7.) Starcraft
8.) Diablo (original)
9.) Metal Gear Solid (original playstation)
10.) Everquest (original)

Honorable mentions: 007: Goldeneye, Killer Instinct (arcade), Grand Theft Auto series, Sonic The Hedgehog (genesis), Street Fighter II Turbo, Quake II, Warcraft series...

10 Resistance: Fall of Man
9 Chess (when it came out on the old Apple IIGS)
8 Tetris
7 Final Fantasy VII
6 Mario All-Stars
5 God of War
4 Super Mario World (SNES)
3 Diablo II
2 Super Mario Bros RPG
1 NHL 94

[img:640:450]http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/ ... 836-00.jpg[/img]

You all remember this game I hope from back in 1996. It was my first RPG and greatest Mario game since Mario Bros 3. Coupled with NHL '94, there was nothing but classic times and memories. I could beat this game in four hours. I found the Lazy Shells by myself and everything. I needed FAQ guides to find Culex. Just curious, was anyone ever able to get 30 or more super jumps in a row? I think my record was 28.

I've been noticing that some classic, rare games, are getting up in price. This game in good condition can sell for $40. If you hate emulators as much as me, then this must be driving you crazy. Lets take a look at the prices of classic games as posted on Amazon.com

[img:115:115]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/3 ... AA115_.jpg[/img]
Super Mario RPG. SNES. 30 Used and New from $45.00

[img:150:150]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/2 ... AA150_.jpg[/img]
Zelda: A Link to the Past. SNES. 64 Used and New from $17.99

[img:115:115]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/3 ... AA115_.gif[/img]
Super Mario All Stars. SNES. 31 used and new from $33.99

[img:280:280]http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G ... 280_.L.jpg[/img]
SNES System. 44 used and new from $62.00

[img:115:115]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4 ... AA115_.gif[/img]
NHL '94. 19 used and new from $0.85. This is a real steal, and a slap in the face. This is one of the best sports games of all time, and it is selling at Dollar General.

[img:115:115]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/3 ... AA115_.jpg[/img]
Final Fantasy VII. PS one. 36 used and new from $65.00

So, here is my competition. I challenge everybody here to search on Amazon.com for old-school games (made before the year 2000) in search of the most expensive game. Lets set some rules:

A) The game must sell alone
B) The game must be for one of the following systems: NES, SNES, PS one, Sega Genesis, Game Boy (original black and white), Sega Game Gear, Nintendo 64

Here is my submission and the title to beat:

[img:115:115]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/3 ... AA115_.jpg[/img]
Tomba! PS One. 13 used and new from $66.59

Well, my list goes all the way to 11. That's 1 more.

11. Ultima III - Exodus
10. Quake III - Arena
9. Super Mario World
8. Wasteland
7. Time Crisis II (arcade)
6. Street Fighter II
5. Starcraft
4. Final Fantasy I
3. Civilization IV
2. World of Warcraft
1. DOOM II

11. Ultima III - Exodus

Tons of classes and races, opened up RPG gameplay dramatically. 3-D dungeons!

10. Quake III - Arena

He who hasn't fragged somebody with a railgun at 1000 yards has not yet lived.

9. Super Mario World

Best platformer ever, fun to play, took full advantage of the technology of the SNES, tons of secrets, challenge, had it all.

8. Wasteland

Text-based RPG from ~1987, highly imaginative, post-apocalyptic.

7. Time Crisis II (arcade)

I frequently beat it on one play, thanks be to the Video Game Gods to make an arcade game viable to do this.

6. Street Fighter II

The zenith of arcade gaming. When you could sit on the controls and take challengers for hours one a single play. I pwned with Chun Lei, Ken.

5. Starcraft

I logged many an hour on this game. Probably the most replayable game of all time, that I've encountered at least. But the RTS genre is not without its flaws (concentrating all your forces and waiting until the very last minute/maximum units was the inevitable strategy for 98% of the scenarios.)

4. Final Fantasy I

Very intuitive "elemental" damage system, fast to play, great transportation solutions, somewhat non-linear.

3. Civilization IV

An epic franchise. Even with its serious flaws (military is everything, micromanaging is tedious) this game satisfied the intellect like no other.

2. World of Warcraft

Pretty much solves every problem inherent to RPG's, great combat system, leveling system, artwork, co-op system. Hell, it even discourages you from getting cracked out with an innovative XP system based on log-time.

1. DOOM II

Imaginative, ahead of its time, downright scary. There are better FPS out there, but I have yet to see one that lets you round up all the enemies on the entire level and then entice them to duke it out among each other.

1. Resident Evil (the original non-directors cut for PS1)- played this game god only knows how many hours when I was a teenager.

2. Command and Conquer Red Alert 2

3. Super Mario World- Best side scroller

4. Resident Evil 4- Didn't like the diversion away from zombies as the main make-up of the game, but it's hard to argue with the gameplay, graphics, and style of the game.

5. World of Warcraft- Yes it eats your life, but there's a reason for it. I actually managed to quit for a solid 6 months or so until Punches dragged me back in.

6. NHL 98, 2000, 2001- Played those 3 specifically an awful lot at one point

7. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis- To me 10x better than the overrated 2nd one.

8. Tecmo's Deception- a very unsung game. The sequel was just as good and probably better. A cool mix of action, RPG, and satanic worship.

9. Call of Duty- The genre has been repetitively overdone since then, but was a really cool shooter when it came out.

10. GTA: Vice City- I think the genre is also overdone now, but it was a really cool concept. Played 1, the 1969 expansion, the 2nd one, the 3rd one, VC, and SA.

Just off of the top of my head...

1. Gauntlet (arcade)
2. Dragon's Lair (arcade)
3. Beyond Good and Evil (PS2, GC)
4. Super Mario 64 (N64)
5. Tecmo Bowl (NES)
6. Super Mario 3 (SNES)
7. Paperboy (arcade)
8. Dance Dance Revolution (arcade)
9. Kya (PS2)
10. Ico (PS2)

I'll probably redo this about eighty times in the next few days. :)

No doubt, Halo was a great game (talking about the original). I just think the Halo series is extremely over-hyped and overrated. Halo 2 didn't do much for me, and I haven't even picked up the 3rd one, nor do I have any real desire to do so.

Really tough to just pick 10.

In no real order....

1) Super Mario Bros. (The one that started it all for me)
2) Mario Kart 64
3) Final Fantasy (specifically I and IV...IV being king)
4) Diablo (the original)
5) Metal Gear (NES & Original Playstation)
6) Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) and Ocarina of Time (N64)
7) Quake II
8) Dungeon Siege
9) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
10) Call of Duty

Honorable mention: Max Payne, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Prince of Persia, RBI Baseball, Fable, Donkey Kong Country (N64), Punchout (the Mike Tyson one not the stupid Mr. Dream one...even though he's just a white Mike Tyson.. ), Illusion of Gaia, Half-Life, Wolfenstein 3d, Doom (original).

I still don't really understand why Halo is so huge. I remember back in college EVERYBODY played it and it was almost like a religion to some of them. I think it's a pretty fun game and all but there's nothing that special about it. There have been other multiplayer games that I think are far more entertaining (Quake II w/mods topping the list). Of course I've never gotten into playing First Person Shooters with a console. Give me Halo on a PC and it might be a different story.

3 was better than 2 by far, but even THEN I don't think #3 would crack my lineup until we start talking top 25.

I think the biggest reason I personally got into it so much was the story. It's one of those games that made me CARE about what happened next, not just "cmon, next level so I can keep killing aliens." There's a deep story that, if you get into it, the game gets into you. Near perfect graphics and level layouts did nothing but improve it from there. #1 was the best with that, #2 was way confusing but #3 was good.

Multi-player mode has just evolved into the best first person multiplayer xbox live shooter that there is- you dont need to appreciate the game as much to appreciate online with it.

For me it has to be all about Quake II. I worked at a place where we played this over the network and there's nothing like torching coworkers at 1000 yards with one shot of the railgun. The best was we'd play 1/2 hour past quitting time and get paid time and a half for playing Quake.

Quake II freakin' rules.

Gotta give a big ++ to this one. Quake II is hands-down the best multiplayer game I've ever played. There hasn't been a game that has even come close to surpassing the amount of time I logged into this one.

I played it all but I probably spent the most time playing CTF. You can't beat the grappling hook....

The railgun is a n00b cannon. Take me on in COD 4, Resistance, or Warhawk!

Good list, I'd go with Golden Axe 2, though.

Do you mean Mario Bros or Super Mario Bros. That's old school if you meant the one where you bump the floor and flip over the crabs and turtles.
