video cataloging software?
Alright, I've got a friend that is has a crapload of family videos and clips that he has compiled, there are quite a few different formats (mov, mpg, avi)--in any case, he is wanting to catalog them all on his computer, do ratings, add keywords/tags and be able to search by those. He has a PC--I know "Imovie has that in its library feature!", but he doesn't have a mac and he won't be getting one. Any suggestions?

Sony Vegas might do the trick.

Get a Mac.
"Don't need it proven
don't want to listen
don't need a tour
of the pieces I'm missing..."

Did some research...
Media Cruiser

MoviePhile

I haven't used either...but they are both supposed to be free...so they are worth a look.

...as a secondary computer? Absolutely.Ruutu15 wrote:Blues Fan in SF wrote:Get a Mac.
Don't get me wrong...I like Macs a lot...but let's be honest here, you can do so much more with a pc right now...plus they are cheaper.

Re: video cataloging software?
I have a G3 iBook (dual usb) with the maximum RAM (640) and 80G HD running OS X 10.4...it's the last G3 ibook model made, and it serves as my primary computer most of the time. There's really not much I cant do with it. I'm sure that will change with the new OS not being supported, but what can you do on your PC that I couldn't do on a mac?cprice12 wrote:...as a secondary computer? I was talking primarily about a lot of the small applications you can download and install.Ruutu15 wrote:I have a G3 iBook (dual usb) with the maximum RAM (640) and 80G HD running OS X 10.4...it's the last G3 ibook model made, and it serves as my primary computer most of the time. I'm just guessing here...but I'd say at least 90% of all of the cool little freeware apps you can download, are for a pc.

Re: video cataloging software?
There is plenty of software that can't be used on a Mac without dual booting or using vmware. There are games, smaller apps, and absolutely tons of business specific apps that just can't be used on a Mac. Our entire systems database can't be run on mac, and the guy uses his computer for business as well.
I did tell him he should consider getting a mini and some network storage if he was really concerned about it.

The dual boot thing isn't perfect either. It has a lot of problems. It's not the same as running windows on a pc.Rocketpop wrote:There is plenty of software that can't be used on a Mac without dual booting or using vmware.
And it looks like Macs will have to start dealing with viruses now. Mac viruses are starting to pop up.
