Hellstrom suffers season ending injury

Post by Ehijo »

Looks like we made some news.

Yesterday LGB-poster majikle sent me a pm about Peoria defenseman Alexander Hellström. Majikle claimed that Hellström had been seen wearing a cast on his left wrist, but that the rivermen hadn't reported anything about this, at least not officially. I sent the info to a reporter covering hockey in Umeå, where Hellström's former team Björklöven plays. The reporter called up Hellström to clear things out. Here's a translation of the article.

Link (Swedish).

HELLSTRÖM GONE FOR THE SEASON
Alexander Hellströms NHL dream is in pieces. At least for this season.
--It's tough right now, Hellström says.

Just over two weeks ago he twisted his left wrist while fighting for the puck during one of the Peoria Rivermens training passes.
--I thought it was just some normal swellings. But it never got any better, says Hellström, who now walks around with his arm in a cast.
At first he wanted to keep playing AHL-games. But the doctors said no.
--I've begged and pleaded with them to get to play on pain killers. But it was probably just as well that I didn't get to.

After having some X-rays taken earlier this week, the doctors decided that the wrist needded surgery. A heave blow for Alexander Hellström, since he wasn't that far from getting some playing time in the NHL.
The St. Louis Blues, who has Peoria Rivermen as their farm team, has lots of injuries on defensemen at the moment, and if he was ready to go, Alexander Hellström would have been one of the candidates to ghet called up.
--That just makes it extra bad.
within two weeks, it's time for surgery. After that awaits a full month with the arm in a cast, and after that he can finally start rehabilition training.
--Then it's all about getting my strength back.
But by then the season will in all probability be over.
--I'll train hard as hell this summer, that's for sure, says Alexander Hellström.

You read it here first, folks. Thanks majikle, for getting this info out.

That's too bad. I was hoping to see him play a few games. But this type of injury shouldn't have any long term effect on him. He should be one of The Rivermen's most solid defencemen next season.

Hey...all we knew was that Hellstrom's wrist was (for some reason) in a cast. I knew you was always asking about him so PMd you with the information. You were the one that managed to track down the reason.

I find the scenerio rather funny.....

I'm sitting here in West Virginia when I get an email from a friend in Peoria that tells me about the cast. I then get on a St Louis Blues message board and PM you.. in Sweden. You manage to find a news guy ...also in Sweden ... that gets on the phone to Hellstrom ...back in Peoria. He then publishes the article ... there in Sweden... which you translate and put back on the St Louis board.

Ya gotta love the internet. :okman:

He was most likely getting a call up based on his draft position. As a Defensemen, he certainly hasn't played himself into a call up. Good kid. He hasn't played to his potential at all. Needs another full year in the AHL. Or he needs another off year to bulk up and improve his speed going into training camp next season.

He was drafted 184th overall, but you're right, guys drafted in that spot always get callups solely because of their draft position...

Hellstrom's got more goals as a North American rookie than he had in his last three seasons combined in the Allsvenskan, and I've heard nothing but praise from Dave Baseggio about Hellstrom's work ethic and team play since Day One of this season.

I am certainly not Coach Bags. But if you look at the past Euro prospects playing in the AHL anything short of positive reinforcement from the coaches in the press could send the kids packin' for home. He certainly has potential. I am just saying that he needs another 1/2 to full year in the AHL to develop. Great size and skill set that could use another 10-15 lbs of muscle on his body.

Draft position was a mistake on my part. It should of been stated as prospects in the system.

It was mentioned in the PJStar finally.....
RIVER READINGS: Rivermen rookie defenseman Alex Hellstrom is done for the season because of tendon damage in his left wrist. He's scheduled to have surgery Tuesday in St. Louis.
