Series Thread: PIT @ STL

Post by theohall »

Friday: Zack Duke, LHP (2-5, 5.11) vs. Todd Wellemeyer, RHP (5-1, 3.36), 7:15
Saturday: Paul Maholm, LHP (2-5, 5.11) vs. Mike Parisi RHP (0-1, 2.87), 6:15
Sunday: Ian Snell, RHP (2-4, 5.46) vs. Braden Looper, RHP (6-4, 5.05), 1:15
Monday: Tony Gorzelanny, LHP (4-5, 7.38) vs. Adam Wainwright, RHP (5-2, 2.86), 7:15

Should be an interesting Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Monday both look like favorable matchups for the Cardinals.

I'm interested to see how Parisi holds up starting on Saturday. Should be an interesting series.

I really dont understand why Anthony Reyes is still in this organization. The guy has a 2.04 ERA in 4 starts in Memphis with 19 K's in 17.2 innings. Yet they have a guy that had a 4.41 ERA in Memphis and zero MLB starts pitching on Sunday. A know some people think that Reyes is kind of a headcase, but i think the problem is Duncan. When Reyes performs his best, he isn't pitching how Duncan wants him to pitch and therefore he is given the cold shoulder.

Part of the catch with the Reyes/Duncan thing - Duncan has proven he knows how to get the most out of almost any kind of pitcher. Reyes is still young and while he's done fine at the AAA level, who knows if he's got the patience for starting at the major level? The one thing Duncan is right about, Reyes relied too much on one pitch as his out pitch when he was with the big club and it cost them games. Don't know if he's still doing that in Memphis, but it is something to consider.

Oh yeah... and Reyes is likely only with the organization still because they haven't found a good trade partner. If Reyes continues doing well starting in Memphis, he'll get traded this summer.

I don't think Reyes will ever get another chance with the big club.

If we're thinking, as some have mentioned, that Chris Duncan may be done w/the Cardinals then Anthony Reyes should have had the door crush his nose some 8 losses ago. The only thing he has done well was game 1 of the WS and I've heard talk that the case there was more of the Tigers players hitting into outs than Reyes pitching lights out baseball. I know that there are groundball and flyball pitchers, but from all the recent evidence of Reyes' abilities: WS game 1 looks more like a fluke/bad Tigers hitting than Reyes.

Duncan meanwhile HAS had hitting success throughout his short career here (career slug pct near .500). He is having a slow season right now, but his career #s show that he is a 20hr/year guy with decent power who hits near .250. The problem IMO is that he can't play 1st base here and is forced into the outfield where, even though he often makes the catch (field pct near .970), he looks like an idiot.

I think Reyes can still probably make it in the majors, just not with the Cardinals. He needs a change of scenery and the Cardinals need whatever prospects they can get for him.

I disagree with that completely. Duncan really has one philosophy and it's not exactly earth-shattering... keep the ball down. That's great and all but some pitchers achieve their success in other ways, and in Reyes' career he has been at his best when he's free to use a high fastball... something that Duncan doesn't want him to use. Even this year when he was more successful in relief it was talked about a lot that one of the reasons why is because he was throwing his high fastball, as he has his entire pre-Duncan career.

8 runs allowed by Parisi. 1 so far by Jiminez. 3 innings. Good thing that Reyes is still in Memphis.

Jimenez should never pitch again for the Cardinals. Yea, he's great in the minors, but he sucks in his stints with the Cards. So that tells me he's a lifelong minor leaguer. Good bye!

Yeah... Cardinals win....

I'm still trying to figure out why TLR ever lets Looper pitch in the 6th inning, though. Let's let him load the bases, then decide we might need to bring in a relief pitcher.

Don't think anyone saw that one coming. As good as Wainwright has been, one really bad inning (even if a game losing one) isn't that big a deal. Too bad the Cardinals couldn't convert their opportunities after that.

Series still ended 2-2, which is kind of what was expected with Parisi and Looper pitching. We'll see if Parisi can take the offensively challenged Nationals on Thursday.
