I'm just going to say this, and take it any way you want.

If I telephoned the parents of one of my kids whilst in front of a crowded room and lambasted their child with a slew of offensive comments geared to show my frustration with their behavior, that would be a very bad thing.

If I privately complain about the kid with a couple of colleagues and use the same offensive comments, that's not a bad thing. Well, it is a bad thing, but it's not even in the same realm of bad as the former example.

There's a public persona and a private persona we all need to keep separate from each other, otherwise we position ourselves for all sorts of criticism. If we can't segregate private from public behaviors, trouble ensues.

People seem to think when private persona behavior is stumbled upon or revealed due to subterfuge or other means, then it's fair game.

e.g., Hulk Hogan's phone call, Alec Baldwin's phone call.

How much transparency do you want? None at all?

I see political correctness as being akin to extreme nationalism, only we do have political and legal protections than guard our liberty. When it comes to the social realm, if people decide you're ruined in your career, it's pretty much over. There's really no guard against accusations of racism, sexism etc. In that respect, social taboo is more powerful that political taboo, mainly because if you're offensive politically, there is going to be a substantial portion of people willing to stick up for you to keep you viable regarding transactions concerning your marketability and social acceptance potential.

Screw up on the political correctness meter and there are only a handful that will have your back.

I heard this joke not long after the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident, when the FCC was up everyones ass. Artie Lange told the joke on the Howard Stern show when they were still on terrestrial radio. Howard had a dump button. Dead Air Dave's only job at KROCK in NY was to hit the dump button on stuff management thought was offensive but Howard didn't. The show was aired in STL on a 1 hr delay due to the time zone difference. The FCC, who you bet your ass was listening didn't blink. You know who laughed loudest in the studio? Robin Quivers, who if you haven't noticed, is black. But she is also very intelligent, and knows the difference between someone spewing hatred and hurt full BS, and someone who is using a clever play on words in an attempt at humor. I wish the rest of the world was as smart as Robin.
