There was a runner on 3rd with one out. And Yadi has been one of the most clutch hitters on this team over the last few years.

I get walking Yadi for that very reason. It's the "And Schu" part that has me baffled. Yadi ain't the fleetest of runners so why not take the chance of trying to get the DP from Schu instead of pitching to the guy whose been hitting lights out for awhile now?

I agree... and I'd even rather pitch to Yadi than Miles. I'll take my chances with a guy who has been clutch over a span of time over the guy who's solar-surface hot right now......

The baserunner at first isn't what matters. It's the batter, and with Shumaker running, I don't think you can even attempt the double-play if you have a play at home in that situation.

I understand walking Molina. That makes perfect sense. Molina is a tough guy to strike out, and a strikeout is what they wanted...so they put him on first.

But, personally, I wouldn't have walked Shumacher and pitch to Miles with the bases loaded. If Shumacher hits a ground ball, they wouldn't have to try and turn two, they could have thrown home since you know Pujols is going on contact. Assuming they get the out at home, then you'd have two outs with Miles up and runners on 1st and 2nd...a much more desirable situation for SD.

Miles has been on fire and IMO, it's too risky to load the bases with hitters who haven't been as hot as Miles, and then pitch to Miles.

But I guess I understand why he pitched to Miles. A ground ball may get you a double play 2nd to 1st or home to 1st or just get the out at home. The fielders had more options for outs. It was a gamble that just didn't pay off. If it works, it's genius.

I'm glad it didn't work. :okman:

I don't think there was anything genius about it at all.. I think they just didn't know/realize Miles has been consistently hot lately.

Do you guys realize you're talking about AARON MILES? I don't care how hot he is, he's Aaron Miles. It was his FIRST EVER game winning hit.

The Aaron Miles that's hitting .323? .350 at home? .427 during the day? ;)

Exactly. I don't give a crap what his name is...he's on fire.

And the Padres knew exactly how well Miles has been hitting. If they didn't, their coaching staff should be fired for not being prepared for the game.

The potential pitcher had TLR's cajones-like substitution move not worked. :)

I don't care that it was his first game winning hit, Aaron Miles has been one of our best bench players in several years. They ran a stat at the game last night that said he's hitting over .350 when he starts, and is hitting .323 overall. Plug him in the lineup at the beginning of the game, or put him in a pinch hitting assignment, and the guy will still hit.
