Pouring Concrete Question

Post by cprice12 »

I am going to be putting in a deck right next to our pond. It's going to attach to an existing dock. A few of the deck posts will pretty much be at the shoreline.
Surely those post holes are going to fill up with water.
If they do, does anyone know of any concrete pouring tips for pouring concrete posts in water filled holes?

Is there a specific type of concrete I should use?

I thought about covering the bottom of the Sonotube with thick plastic so as to keep the water out of the tube long enough for the concrete to set. Not sure if that's the best way though.

I think if you have an exposed piece of the tube above the water you can just start dumping quikcrete in there and it'll eventually displace the water in the tube.

I thought of that. But don't you have to pour the concrete directly into the bottom of the tube to properly displace the water?
If you dump concrete into the top of a sonotube that is full of water, the concrete will break up and separate into rock and sand before it gets to the bottom, right?
Don't you have to use some sort of tube or hose that you insert all the way to the bottom of the tube and pour concrete through that so it gets to the bottom without traveling through all of the water and breaking up? I also heard a consistent flow of concrete is key.

Maybe I'm wrong...and I hope I am, because that would be an easy way to do it.

Never poured concrete on a shore, but have taken the easy way out of dumping Quikrete in a hole filled with water (when the damn sump pump wasn't fast enough to drain it) and the post set fine.

Sand bag (or something) around the hole to keep new water out and pump the old water out.

I'd have to dig a pretty f'ing big hole to do that.

Wouldn't this method run the risk of there being too much water and the concrete not setting, or setting extremely weak?

I don't understand the bigger hole comment. You speak of the sonotube that would fill with water. combine the different posts. Have the tube above the water line so minimal "new" water gets in and use a pump that can suck water and pump it away, like an air operated diaphragm pump, to get rid of the "old" water, then pour the concrete properly. The water company's and MSD, etc use pumps to clear old water before working anywhere.

As tempting as it is to pour the concrete while your victim is still conscious, you need to resist the temptation and just do it while he's knocked out. As much fun as it would be to see the horror on their face as you pour and they realize their fate, no amount of restraints will stop them from moving enough to mess up the mold. The last thing you want is for them to wiggle enough that they are able to escape later. Don't worry though, the concentrated horror you get when the wake up and realize what's going on more then makes up for it.

In my opinion you want them to wake up already on the dock with the water right in front of them for the maximum effect.

It's a shared pond. Two other people own portions of the pond.

Why you continue to think I'm rich...I have no idea. I am far from rich and am solidly in the middle class.
My wife is a financial wiz and is great at saving money. End of story.

So unless you have some concrete suggestions to contribute here...go somewhere else if you want to bitch and whine about not having any money.

Define "rich" curt.

And I'm not whining about not having any money, I'm whining about you having a ton of money, enough to buy your own personal compound with acreage and a personal pond.

It's called saving your money for a worthwhile purchase down the road. That's what we did. You should try it sometime.
And if you're not whining about not having any money, then why do you care what I do with mine?

And to be honest, I'm not sure how your comments are going to help me put in a deck. So you get a big fat FAIL in this thread.

It's obvious with the gazillions of dollars you have you should hire a team of concrete craftsmen from some old-world country to help build your estate. Think Vanderbilt or Hearst.
