Ian Cole to leave Notre Dame?

Post by F Keenan »

Former 1st Rounder Ian Cole Leaving Notre Dame?
The Blues plan on sitting down with Notre Dame standout Ian Cole at the club's upcoming propsect camp and are still hopeful he considers turning pro before this upcoming season. There are no guarantees that he makes the NHL roster but as it sits right now he would have a very decent shot. How would this impact Alex Pietrangelo???

I would love to see this kid join the team. Even is it's the AHL, it's time for him to jump up a level from NCAA.

As I understood it when we drafted him, he was a work in progress that we would have to be patient with. If he DOES leave the NCAA, I wouldn't put him any farther than the AHL.

From everything I've read, the kid was more than happy to stay put at Notre Dame until his 4 years were up. Hopefully we can work something out and see what he can do whether its in the AHL or on the big club (which is a long shot for this year, I'd say).

And why not? We're not dying for young d-men right now, he might as well stay down there. Also, you're seeing more and more players that stay in college for 2-3 years simply tell their team that they might as well get their degree so they stay for the full 4.

NCAA players take way too long to go pro. 3 or 4 years college. 2 years in the ahl.

Canucks drafted a player in the ushl in 2007, hes going into his 3rd year with the gophers. Guy is still 3 years away. Not sure how these guys go 1st round.

Aode, I'm not ready to place him on the opening night roster. We have been patient. His game has progressed beyond the NCAA level. It's time for him to take it to the next level. If we get him into camp, we will be able to see where he matches up. It will most likely be the AHL. The problem is he has stated in the past that he would not leave unless it was for the NHL. Hopefully this means that JD and Co has been able to talk a little sense into him. The difference between NCAA and AHL is night and day.

Then they blow out a knee and work at Kinkos with a Communications degree, good plan.

Doesn't a year in the AHL click off a year of his entry level contract, thus putting him a year closer to the second contract (see Polack), a year closer to RFA, etc? Whereas an extra year in college, the clock doesn't start ticking yet? I don't know if he can still improve in college, but if so, it may be best for the team in the long run.

He's not jumping. This is leverage against Polak.

Wasn't aware of his previous statements, thanks for that. And yes, I know the NCAA is not the AHL

True. I wasn't saying I agreed with it, but it seems that more and more players are staying for the full 4 years to get their degrees now; that's all I was trying to point out. Also happening in the NFL- its just that more and more players are less willing to dive headfirst into the pros when they are in college.

It will put him closer to RFA, but it won't put him any closer to UFA. He's already 20, so 7 years pro would put him at 27 which is the UFA age anyway. I doubt he'll improve anymore at college. College is WAY below the AHL level, and not even as good as the CHL.

His parents want him to stay at Notre Dame, I don't know how fake his degree will be, and he wants NHL or stay in school. The Blues will give him money to finish his degree at Notre Dame, so it isn't a problem with him not being able to get that education.

He's too good for his competition down there and will benefit nothing on the hockey front from staying another year.

If he stays, it's a clear statement that being a great hockey player is not the most important thing in his life.

His call though!
