SAGUENAY, Quebec — The son of former Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy pleaded guilty to assault Wednesday for an on-ice beating that sparked a nationwide debate in Canada about violence in hockey.
In addition to the guilty plea, Jonathan Roy offered a $5,000 check to charity. A judge granted Roy absolute discharge, meaning the former goalie will have no criminal record. It also allows the budding singer to pursue a musical career in the United States.
Quebec court Judge Valmont Beaulieu handed down his sentence a few hours after the 20-year-old Roy caught people off-guard by pleading guilty as his two-day trial was set to begin.
Hall of Famer Patrick Roy was coaching behind the bench when his son, a goalie with the Quebec Remparts, skated across the rink during a junior game in March 2008 to pummel an opposing goalie.
"I assume total responsibility for what I did," Roy told the court. "I lacked an enormous amount of judgment and I regret it. What I did had nothing to do with hockey. I stepped over the line. . . . My parents have been deeply affected, especially my mother. I don't think she's recovered yet from the beating Dad gave her last night."

That's just ridiculous how he goes after the other goalie.

So I guess if someone in the NHL doesn't want to fight someone they can turn around and sue the fighter then. The other goalie should have grow a sack and fought back, instead of taking it like a puss.

If you didn't do anything to warrant being attacked and you don't want to fight, you shouldn't have to fight.
I don't think I'd want Kariya fighting back against Laraque or any other heavyweight just because they want to go after Kariya for no reason. Kariya could get killed if he tried to go toe to toe.
Fighting should be left to the guys who have a reason to fight.
I don't know what the other goalie did, but if he didn't do anything...then Roy is a piece of shit and deserves to have his ass beat. At least he had the sack to plead guilty.
I will agree with you on that Kurt. The other goalie could have skated away though.

The beating part may not have been in the original article, but I think it was implied at least.

that's not the point. the point is that it was more accepted in the 70s to actually act like you have a ballsack instead of a scar left by the emasculating scythe of pussydom.
