SYDNEY -- A six-month-old baby boy whose pram rolled onto railway tracks in front of an oncoming train has survived with only a bump to the head, officials said Friday.

The child, who was strapped into his stroller when the accident occurred, was dragged about 35 metres by the train as it pulled into Ashburton station in Melbourne's east on Thursday afternoon.

"The pram rolled a very short distance straight over the edge of the platform and onto the tracks right as the train was coming in," Connex trains spokesman John Rees told AFP.

"The baby has gotten away with just a cut on the forehead."

Rees said the driver slammed on the brakes as hard as possible as soon as he saw the pram tumble in front of him, and was aided by the fact that the train was slowing down as it entered the station.

Paramedics, who arrived to find the baby being comforted by his mother, confirmed the child received a bump on his head.

"Luckily he was strapped into his pram at the time, which probably saved his life," paramedic Jon Wright said in a statement.

The accident occurred one day after Connex issued a child safety awareness campaign focusing on warning parents to keep infants strapped into their prams at all times while on train platforms.

Jesus.
I'd have probably had a seizure right there on the spot if that happened to me.

Glad the baby is ok.

As a non-parent, I can only make the assumption that a pram is a stroller?

Thankfully it was obviously well constructed and not some shoddy crap to protect the kid, and thankfully the kid came out alright.

Also thankfully this probably won't be the kids earliest memory.

I can just see it now: "Hey son, how was school?" "Pretty good, but I had a weird blackout/flashback incident when I was playing dodgeball and got hit." "Hmm, well I'm sure it's nothing and has nothing to do with the fact that you were hit by a train as a baby."

I cannot believe that the baby only suffered a bump on the head after that. Might need to get checked out w/Kryptonite just to see it's reaction. I'm glad the baby is fine. It's one in a billion the baby is even still living, even more so that it wasn't even hurt.

Completely an accident, but the mom should have been paying more attention knowing that a freggin train was coming down the line. My wife told me that a few weeks ago in the US, there was a whole campaign going on about being extra cautious with your children around the metro/subway.

Just glad the baby's okay. I'll bet the train driver didn't sleep for a few days after that...
