Who would you give up for Ovechkin?

Post by xbleed83bluex »

If the trade deadline was tommorow, and the Caps were offering us Ovechkin for a reasonable deal, who would you give up?

Boyes+ Eller + perron + first rounder?

Perron + Peitrangelo + 2 first rounders?

Johnson + Eller + Perron +oshie?

Crombeen, Winchester...and throw in a draft pick to make it enticing.

To disagree, one doesn't have to be disagreeable.

I can't think up a possible package that this team could put together that the Caps would take. It doesn't exist.

There isn't a single name or combination of names on this roster or anyone they would draft in the near future that is as dynamic and the full package as Ovechkin is. You can replace his numbers but you can't replace HIM. As a franchise, they would lose money on any deal they would make regarding Ovi, regardless of who they got- and I would even stretch that to include Sidney Crosby. He's the best hockey player in the world.

Crosby/Ovechkin's come along once a decade at most and the NHL got two in as many years.

But playing along with your hypo: ANY 4 or 5 names on our roster and probably 2-3 first rounders. Five max. There's no price that's too high for this guy. NONE.

I assume meaning 23 guys on the roster - pick any 3 you want.

I would give up Brewer's first born child.

This is what I meant, minus the Brewer's first born child part.

Sorry, I have a math degree and it slips out sometimes. All I could think about was combinations/permutations.

I would give up Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka and Doug Lynch.

Wait, no GM is dumb enough to take that offer for an all-star.

It obviously won't happen but why do you mention perron so muh in those offers, I would much rather give up berglund or even oshie before perron at this point. I do have a pretty big man crush on perron though.

I'm not sure that the Caps would accept the entire Blues roster for Ovechkin.

Wow, that's kind of pushing it - 5 first rounders? I don't know if I'd go that far. But I would give up Kariya, Boyes, Eller, Oshie, in a package deal.

I also would consider his 124 million, 13-year contract he just signed before trading for him. That's a 9.5 million cap hit/year early on according to NHL team salary websites. I am a huge non-supporter of these lucrative contracts that span over a decade. Is he worth the money right now? ABSOLUTELY and I would literally be okay with the Blues trading 3 players (ANY players except Andy McDonald) and 2-3 first rounders. But there would HAVE to be something conditional in there somewhere that says if he has a career ending injury in the next 2 years, we get one of the first round picks back. Otherwise, with a 13-year contract, we could give up first rounders like crazy and our best young players, but if he has a career ending injury, without that conditional add-in, we'd be worse off than we are now, and worse off for YEARS to come...

Of course, this is ALL hypothetical. Honestly, I don't even think Ovechkin would be successful under Murray's current system... he'd be playing third line grinder or something after a few games. Washington is a very offensive minded team who plays fast, hard, and risky. Coming to a slow, New Jersey rip-off style team would be a huge shock, even to someone as good as Ovechkin.

Including all of Peoria, all of Alaska and a shitload of draft picks. Ovechkin is just the best there is today and there is no way whatsoever that he will be traded.
