LCD > Plasma

My parents had a plasma that just outright exploded the day after their warranty expired. It cost more to replace the necessary broken parts than to just go ahead and buy a new TV. They went with an LCD and it's still working just fine with as good a picture as the plasma ever had when it was working.

The missus and I chose to go with an LCD as a result of their plight. Cheaper, last longer, quality just as good.

hum...everything else i've read says the opposite. all the reviews and shit say that the colors are much more vibrant and the blacks are like ink....
could it be the older LCDs that they are refering to?
what ever happened to DLP? is that pretty much phased out?

I don't know if you can say LCD > Plasma based on one unfortunate incident. I've heard horror stories from both sides. I have a Pioneer Kuro plasma and couldn't be happier with it. I've always thought that colors seem richer on plasmas and you get better whites/blacks. Viewing angles are also better (though LCD's have improved in this dept.). Oh, and if anyone tells you that you have to worry about burn in with a plasma they are idiots. Unless you buy some cheapo off-brand set this shouldn't be an issue at all.

A few other things worth mentioning...

- LCD's generally have a longer lifespan; I think it's like 40 years with 8 hrs. of usage a day. (compared to 20 with plasma) but honestly, do you really think you'll have the same tv 40 years from now with the way technology changes?

- LCD's do use less power than plasmas. I don't know $$/mo. difference it makes though.

- LCD's tend to be more affordable.

- Plasma's handle motion better; though again, LCD's are closing the gap here as well.

- LCD's are lighter. If you have to lug this thing down 6 flights of stairs that might be a selling point.

I guess all you can do is pick the one that has the best balance of quality, features and price to you. Everyone's going to have a different opinion on what's good and bad.

true. i havent' been able to find a bad review on this thing. actually, i found one and it had to do with the sd card slot...something about the guy couldn't figure out how to get the pictures to slideshow chronologically, they were random. hardly a show stopper (get it).

Also, if you haven't already you might want to check out this forum:

A lot of people there who are way more knowledgeable about this stuff than I am.

(I suppose Curt will ban me for linking to a different forum. )

Amazing how the price has fallen on these things so quickly. I spent about that, maybe a little more, on a 1080p 32" LCD only a little more than 2 years ago :aaaa:

I've got a 720p Pioneer Plasma that I bought a few years ago.

At the time, Plasmas were superior to LCD's because of the whiter whites, the blacker blacks and the better handling of motion.
It's a kick ass tv. It was more expensive than an LCD, but it was also a lot better. No regrets buying it.
The drawbacks to it are that it does use a lot of power, puts off a lot of heat (nice in the winter) and is fairly heavy (but I don't carry it while watching it, so I don't really care how heavy it is).
If you own a plasma, you may want to unplug it when you aren't using it. Just having it plugged in still uses quite a bit of power. You'll be shocked at how much power a plasma tv uses when it is off.

However, I've heard that today's LCD's have caught up quite a bit in terms of whiter whites, blacker blacks and motion handling.
When we add a tv to the finished basement, it may be an LCD...but I haven't done much research yet, so my opinion may change on that.

I know the new thing is LED tv's...I don't know much about them. I imagine they use a LOT less power and may last longer...and they are more expensive right now. Not sure on picture quality though.

yea curt...you are correct, leds are the new shit. going that big, i can't afford that shit though, not even close. this was plenty of a stretch already. anyway...the thing weighs 90 pounds. and you are very correct about the vampire energy(from what i've heard)...from the panasonic site (for this particular model):

Standby Power Consumption 0.3 W
On Mode Average Power Consumption 293 W

anh...its all good.
i couldn't care less really, i've never owned a tv that wasn't picked from an eviciton pile, so i think i will be happy...
