Peter Forsberg unretires

It sucks we can't claim him because he hasn't played this season. I think he tried a comeback earlier this season in Sweden, but he couldn't do it due to his foot.

EDIT: From around Christmas: "The foot is not for games" http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2010 ... -its-over/

I heard on XM NHL Home Ice just the other day that a Forsberg comeback isn't out of the question yet.

The article I posted says he signed a contract with the Avs after practicing with them for a few weeks. Now he's having some immigration issues, but it sounds like the comeback is a sure thing.

Reretires after two road games. Colorado have lost seven straight games and have fewer points than the Blews. I feel bad for him, but (Frank) the Avalanche. I was going to try to go to the game next Tuesday.

What the hell?

You go through all that trouble, everyone on your team says you look great, don't "give an inkling" of a feeling that you aren't going to finish out the season and then... that's it, sorry, just kidding? Whatever.

Must've been in some pain then or something. Very weird.

I'm wondering what the foot injury is that keeps him out. Sucks for him.

He said his foot/ankle feels like it is sliding around in it's socket.
He's had countless surgeries and braces to try and correct the issue...but nothing has worked.
This goes back to the '03 playoffs when it first started happening.

A lot of people are saying he is a HOF'er. I don't think so.

249 goals
884 assists
+238

He was a great two-way forward...but is he HOF worthy?
Not good enough I say. Injuries did him in.

Adam Oates has 1420 career points, and he isn't in.
Cicarelli has 608 goals...he isn't in.
Gilmour, 1404 pts...not in.
Housely, 1232 pts...not in.

In fact, there are about 35 guys in the history of the game that are currently eligible for the HOF, that have more points than Forsberg, and aren't in the HOF.

Should he get in? No.
Will he get in? Maybe.
If Cam Neely can get in, I guess you never know.

I think it has a lot more to do than just total points.

Peter Forsberg was basically the best two way player in the game for about 5 years.

Also compare the era he played in to the era some of these other players were in: http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Stat/LeagueGoals.aspx

Forsberg is 10th all time in Points Per Game, had a pretty strong influence on players growing up during his era, especially European players. Outside of Jagr he might be the most influential offensive player from Europe in the last 20 years.

Also, the NHL has already set the precedent for a player of his caliber by putting every player from the Canadians dynasty into the HoF. Here's a couple comparables I found while sifting through hockey-reference:

Bill Barber
Ycan Cournoyer
Jacques Lemaire
Steve Shutt

Yes he is.

Career totals aren't everything though. Hated Forsberg, but he definitely belongs.

You're right. I forgot he JUST went in in 2010.

Saying Forsberg belongs is one thing. Backing it up with reasons why is another.
There are a couple dozen players currently not in the HOF that should probably get in before Forsberg.

If he's not a shoo-in, I would be shocked.

Curt, I think you're looking way too much at just the points. As pointed out by others and here: For at least about 5 years he was THE best player in the entire world. He was an iconic figure for Sweden's national hockey team. Dude's on a franking stamp for Christ's sake

If the purpose of the Hockey Hall of Fame is to showcase the greatest who have played the game, I feel you can't make a straight faced argument that he should be kept out.

And not that it matters from the HOF standpoint but I would be pretty surprised if the Avs don't retire his number too.

They'll put the guy in, because he's Swedish, not because of what he did on the ice, which while very good for a brief time, doesn't exactly seem Hall-worthy.

Total bullshit. :x

He was one of the two best forwards in the game for at least a few years, great playmaker and a dominant playoff performer. Personally I thought the guy played like a bitch, particularly the way he'd be the second hardest player in the NHL to take off the puck when he felt like keeping it, whereas a light breeze could knock him down and give him a facewash when he thought a penalty would be more advantageous. Even so, I am forced to accept the truth of the first sentence.

As per the players already mentioned, I have no explanation for why Oates isn't already in the Hall. Gilmour I have to believe would be in if not for his off-ice issues. Both are worthy, and I would have picked both before Ciccarelli. Housley could pass with the best of them but he was an outright defensive liability for most of his career, not an acceptable description of any HHoF defenseman.

First guy I would put in would be Mark Howe.

I think he just had one because you mentioned it. Sad part is he probably doesn't know why.
