Yahoo Fantasy Baseball League Set for 2011

Live Draft March 18th @ 9 PM EST. Anyone who objects let me know before the end of February and I'll change it if enough don't like that. It's a Friday. We already ruled out M, W and Th as possible draft days and the weekend obviously who the hell wants to draft on a weekend? Whatever we do, lets try to not spend 4 hours drafting this year, that was painful towards the end.

12 Teams (I'd like to bump that up to 14, but I don't know), roster sizes are typical except I allowed for 2 DL slots instead of the standard 1.

I was tossing around whether I wanted a 4 team or an 8 team playoff. 4 team makes it more interesting, 8 team makes more players give a shit later in the season when they're stuck towards the bottom. Went with 8.

Stats for this year are:

Batters: Runs, HR, RBI, SB, avg., Hits, Walks, Errors (lowest errors win, of course, and I assume they include pitcher errors)

Pitchers: Wins, saves, K's, ERA, WHIP, Innings Pitched, Holds (thought those two would make for some interesting strategy when deciding whether or not to use SP or RP in the extra pitcher slots) and K/BB ratio.

Also, anyone who uses an alternate version of another teams team name will be instantly stripped of all their top 20 players (REEL!) and they will be redistributed in round robin fashion. I will be playing as the L.I. Express 30 this season.

Need a few more teams.

I was thinking of changing the draft time from 9 PM to 9:30 PM. does anyone know if you can show up late to a draft and still participate?

I know on their football drafts you could. You just have to log into the draft room and uncheck the 'autopick' box.

thing is I know I could make it at 9:30 (8:30 CST) but I don't know necessarily about 9 PM. I honestly don't care if I miss the first two rounds, I'll set those for autopick and get what I get, but it would be nice if the commish could be around for the whole 2 hours or whatever it took last year.

If we don't have two more teams in the next two days, I'm locking it in at 10.

Didn't forget. Got stuck at work. No access to yahoo fantasy baseball or football from work. Fantasy hockey works fine.

I was actually surprised how well the autodraft did for me. It actually managed not to draft guys who are injured for once.

Yeah, me too. I think the auto draft did better than I did last year.

It didn't pick anyone who was out for the season?

Not when the draft happened. The only two issues were Grady Sizemore and Zach Greinke, both of whom were "wait and see" dudes until last week.

And....

Game on is right! It's about time, baseball's back!

I don't feel like doing the research on this, but is Tampa Bay the only team who has a rotation composed entirely of pitchers they drafted themselves? They just locked up Wade Davis to a 4 year extension and it got me to thinking that every one of their starters was a Rays draft pick, and they're all extremely talented, if not for needing maybe a little more seasoning. That rotation could stack up against any team any day of the week. I know a lot of people are bashing the Rays for selling off guys like Bartlett, Crawford, Sub-Mendoza Pena and Soriano, but I think they're actually in a position to be a better team this year. 100 wins, not out of the question for the Rays. Joe Maddon AL manager of the year.

This league favor starting pitching quite a bit at the outset, doesn't it?

Wins, Outs, IP, WHIP, and Ks all tend to be better numbers for SPs, than RPs.

K/BB can go either way depending on the quality of the starters.

Meanwhile, SV and HLD for RPs. Let's look at these two numbers.

48 Saves and 40 Holds were the highs last season. Break this out into number of Saves and Holds/Week. Season ends Sep 28th. 26 weeks total.
Best Save guy = 1.86 saves/week
Best Hold guy = 1.54 holds/week.

We have to have a minimum of two RPs. My question - why carry more than two for such a low return? They aren't going to have high IP, Outs, or Wins compared to SPs.

I probably shouldn't have said anything, since we are competing. :)

I put in holds to open up more opportunity to have relievers on the teams that don't normally get drafted on fantasy teams. It adds a dimension, I think, that requires more thought than just picking which closer will have 40 saves and 100 k's.

My thinking in setting the pitching stats was to create the need to make a decision about whether to value outs over holds and saves and just punt on relievers, or to take a shot at both of those categories while punting outs. WHIP could be improved by having a very good closer, but also by having a very very good, consistent starter.
