I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict Cards sweep the DBacks.

1 down, 2 to go.

Lots of positives emerging, albeit could be shortterm.

McClellan had his 2nd strong start tonight. Berkman, 2 HRs. If we can consistently get solid outings from Carp, McClellan, Garcia and Lohse, we should be able to contend. I know it's too early to expect all 4 to be consistently solid, but those 4 haven't done anything to suggest otherwise either.

I would have bet Berkman wouldn't hit 15 homers this season and he get two last night.

ON a side note..I'm am now completely convinced they are using a new baseball this year. We've seen numerous balls carry much further then usual and cause all kinds of mishaps in the outfield and nearly every home run I've seen this year look like the cheapies we see in Colorado.

There is no way in hell that first diner by Berkman should have left the park.

Ratings and attendance dipped last year, and with the bad aura around the NFL right now, I would be surprised on bit if baseball made a calculated move to attract more of the entertainment dollars.

I understand it's still early and the hitters may just be ahead of pitching still, but the way the ball is acting in so many different parks....it just doesn't look right. If the hitters were ahead of the pitchers, the balls would be getting crushed.....(at least on TV) they just seem to be carrying much further then usual.

Is that pure speculation on your part? I have only got to watch a couple games so far so I really haven't noticed anything. Or have you heard other people talk about a new ball? I would think the mlb would have a press release or something if they were changing something. I tried google for any more information but I'm not sure how to word my search...

If they weren't using Rawlings anymore, it would have made big news. Keep in mind we were in San Francisco which is known to be extremely windy in a way similar to Wrigley and we are in Arizona now which is known as a hitters ballpark where balls carry similar to Colorado. Busch stadium doesn't have as much of a reputation, but it is far from a pitcher's park.

This is from before yesterday's game.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.js ... de=preview
McClellan, coming off a strong 2011 debut as the Cardinals' fifth starter, enters what has been a bit of a house of horrors for him in the past when he takes on the D-backs' Barry Enright in the opener of a three-game series.

Arizona can be a tough place to pitch for everyone.

"It's a good place to score," says Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. "Hard infield, the ball carries."

For McClellan, his first seven appearances have been hard. He takes an 11.25 ERA at the D-backs' home into this start, but he's in more of a set role as part of the Cardinals rotation now.

"I've definitely seen an effect on my sinker and my curveball," McClellan says of his previous work in Arizona. "But it's still one of those things where I've got to make my pitches. Work a little harder.

"They've got a lot different team, I'm in a different role, there are a lot of variables that are different. But I've definitely had my struggles there in the past. It's a tough place to pitch, but their guy has got to do it, too."

You factor that, the wind in SF, the fact that is was Berkman misplaying the ball in STL..........

Like I said, just an observation based on a week and a half of play.

bleh

I guess our pitching "deserves" a night off every now and again. But, if we score 8 runs, we should never lose, and I don't care where we are playing.

Funny quote.....last night John Rooney said......

"These balls most be wound tighter this year"

At least I'm not the only one thinking that.

There's nothing hotter than John Rooney talking about balls...said an eyeliner-wearing Jim Edmonds.

Seriously, Berkman! Can we play in Arizona every few weeks to keep him firing like this? 3 of his 4 homers in this series have been to the opposite field. Impressive.
