Board Games

We got any board gamers here? Along with the bigger games (Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Yahtzee, Scrabble, etc. etc.), do we have any people who play the so-called "designer" games? I've recently been getting into these types of games. Been playing Stone Age, Pandemic (and the expansion On the Brink), Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Tumblin' Dice.

Any gamers out there?

I haven't played in a long time, but I would whoop everyones ass in Scrabble. One time I was playing online, got 3 bingos for my first three words and the other guy got all bent out of shape, called me a cheater and left.

I love chess, but haven't played in years. I can't play on the computer, it sucks on a screen. It must be in person, where you can see the pieces, and play psychological games.

I haven't played chess in years, but I used to play all the time. When I was about 12-13, I would go into the Yahoo game rooms and whoop arse and hit on all the shorty's. A/S/L?

Glen, I see you as more of the Baseball Strat-O-Matic type. Am I wrong there? You being a baseball guy, figured you have given that a spin once or twice.

I have never. As you can probably tell from my epic suck in fantasy baseball, I suck at all baseball games. It's partly I don't have the patience to keep up with things during the summer and partly because I just naturally suck at it.

I do a fair amount of board gaming too, both the classics and some of the designer games you mentioned. I like Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan a lot, and their expansions. Ticket to Ride is good but I've only played it once so far. The recently reissued LOTR board game is similar to Pandemic in that it's a good cooperative game. I really like the old MB game Samurai Swords (originally called Shogun) but I can never find enough people to play it anymore. It's like Risk on steroids, and my wife doesn't even like regular Risk.

Yeah, used to have some epic risk games that we even would have to call it a night and come back to finish the next day.....not anymore.

I was surprised to find that there is a huge board gaming community out there. Boardgamegeek.com is a website that's got a lot of info on it, especially if you are looking into buying a game.

I was never a big Risk guy, but to speed up the game back when I was younger, if you rolled double 6's, you could nuke a continent. Which was fun.

I really cannot get enough of Pandemic right now. Like big d note said, the cooperative aspect draws me to it. Plus, diseases spreading across the world and you have to contain and cure them as a team or you all day? Awesome.

I would definitely recommend playing Ticket to Ride a few more times, big d. It's a simple, quick game, but a lot of fun. There's several different versions although I've only played the original TTR.

I would definitely recommend playing Ticket to Ride a few more times, big d. It's a simple, quick game, but a lot of fun. There's several different versions although I've only played the original TTR.

I'll definitely play it again. My friends that I do a lot of gaming with just bought it recently. They also have the TTR card game but we only played that once. Have you tried the expansion sets for Carcassonne? I've got Inns & Cathedrals, which is a good one, and my friends got the big box of Carcassonne with all the expansions in it. We played one last time that had some pigs and other stuff in it, and it was pretty good.

I haven't played any Carcassone expansions. My most recent purchase (aside from Pandemic: On the Brink) is New World: A Carcassone Game. It's not technically an expansion but I'm looking forward to trying it out.

In actuality, I really do enjoy board games but just seem to play the standard ones everyone does. This thread has peaked my interest in seeing what else is out there, which I'm quickly discovering is A LOT.
