Google Music

Post by Ruutu15 »

Have any of you guys tried this out? I'm in, and I have 4 invitations for those of you who may want them. I'll PM them to the first 4 people who reply (not PM) here.

It's useful anywhere you're near a computer without your music (at work), and if you have an Android phone, you can get the app. You can upload 2,200 songs onto the Google cloud and stream them to your computer or Droid, thus saving space on your device, and having access to your library anywhere.

I have an account. Haven't had time to mess with it too much.
I've heard good things though.

I have a long list of crap I want to do...just need to find the time.

I've got an account but I don't really use it. I'm a little afraid of uploading my music because I have misplaced the hard copies of all my music...

I just use subsonic to stream all my music stored on my home computer and grooveshark for everything else. Grooveshark is awesome btw.

I'm just not sure I'm ready to adopt the Cloud for music storage for pretty much the same reason.

I've bought a few albums off of Amazon that I just store out there, but essentially nothing from my own collection.

++ about Grooveshark. I like using last.fm or pandora to discover new artists and then pop them into Grooveshark to queue up other songs by them. It's nice to just be able to pick whatever and listen to it as much as you want, which is different from sites like last.fm/pandora.

I just wish Grooveshark had an iPhone app. They do, but you have to jailbreak your phone which I'm kind of scared to do. Maybe one day the powers at Apple will let it in the App Store.

I'm a Shoutcast fan.
If you give me the option to skip songs, like-dislike, etc, then I'm constantly screwing with it.
I just want to tune in and let it play in the background as I work or whatever, and not worry about it.

I also listen to XM Radio a lot...but their web player sucks epic suck...so I've been using it less and Shoutcast more. Shoutcast on Winamp is awesome...and free. :okman:

I have REALLY started using Google Music (now Google Play) a LOT more. Love it.
All of my music is in there and I've bought numerous songs & albums that also default to there.
It also streams great through my Droid2 phone. Very convenient to call up a song quickly from anywhere using the Google Play app.

With my increased use of Google Play, I cancelled my XM subscription after 7+ years. Kind of sad, I used to use it all of the time and I used to love it. I just didn't use it anymore except to listen to NHL Home ice in the car to and from work. I listen to shoutcast at work almost exclusively and I have nice speakers and a subwoofer attached to a laptop in my detached workshop that connects to the WIFI from the house and streams either Shoutcast or Google Play out there. It was hard to justify keeping XM at $14/mo. or whatever it was when I listen to free alternatives much more often.

To replace XM in the car, I'm just using my phone and an AUX cable to the stereo in my wife's car and I can stream Shoutcast, Google Play or whatever. I need to get a new stereo in my car since I do not have an AUX port...I'll be doing that soon I guess.

Anyway, I like this setup better, it's more convenient and it's saving me money. :okman:

Curt, make sure to watch your credit card statements. I have a Sirius radio in my car, and my girlfriend has an XM. When we cancelled both of them after about a year, they billed me long after service had been turned off...like 2 months later. Could have just been a strange accounting thing, just a heads up.

I got a Synology DiskStation recently and put all my music on there (146 GB so far). I'm currently streaming music to my work computer with their Audio Station app in my browser. It plays mp3s smoothly, but I'm listening to some flac files right now, and it is buffering a bit with the larger files. However, the box's CPU is also running at 100% making photo thumbnails right now, so that might be part of it. The Synology has built-in support for Shoutcast too. I should check that out.

Haven't heard of that...looked it up...looks pretty cool.
What are the benefits of using that over a free cloud based service like Google Play? I guess it's nice to host your own stuff for one...what are the other benefits?

I got the Synology basically to act as a home server for all my stuff - family pictures, music, movies, shared files, etc. It can do a hell of a lot more too if you want to. Within the house I can stream stuff faster than I could from Google's cloud, and with the right software I can stream over the internet too. I put BubbleUPnP on my Android tablet the other night, and I could stream a full DVD copy in .mkv format from the server with almost no buffering over wireless N. Once I put their server program on the Synology, I'll be able to stream stuff to the tablet over the internet too when I'm away from home. It has UPnP and DLNA support, do I can access media through my TV or Blu-ray player too.

My wife helps with the bulletin at church and they transfer files back and forth with USB drives, which means multiple trips back and forth in the car. I set up a shared folder on the server and gave the three of them access to that folder to share files that way instead. You could do it with Dropbox or something too, but it was just something else I could use the server for, and it only took a few minutes to set up.

They have a Wordpress plug-in too, and I'm thinking about hosting some blogs. I think it even has phpBB support. Synology has a free DDNS service, so I don't have to mess with getting a static IP or remembering my IP address either.

Nice...all of it. :okman:
I wish I had the time to dedicate to setting up something like that.
