What if an OT game just goes on...forever?

Post by xbleed83bluex »

At what point do they stop the game? I know, in theory, playoff overtimes are perpetual until someone scores. But...while it's never happened before...it's quite possible that a game can go on until the next day. Would the game still go on after 24 hours of play time? Until no fans are left in the building? And even if does continue over unto the next day, there might be a concert or an event the next day at the arena, so the game would be forced to end by then. At that point, would they reschedule as a rematch? I've always wondered. It's not too out of the ordinary.

I first thought about this in 96 when game 4 between Florida and Colorado went triple OT and it seemed like no one was beating either Roy or Vanbiesbrouck. I guess they could flip a coin?

If a game lasts too long into overtime they simply fly in Gretzky and have him miss handle the puck at center ice.

I stayed up and watched a 5OT game between I think it was Philly and Pittsburgh back in 2000 or 2001.

I remember tuning in during the first OT, thinking, cool...I'll get to see a little of this game.
Little did I know I was about to watch 5 periods of OT.
It was great.

I was at the Sharks/Stars game 6 that went to 4 overtimes in 2008, It ended at 2:45 AM and I was thinking along the same line, I had to be at class in 5 hours when it ended. Without a doubt the best hockey game I have seen or will ever see. Right from the start it was intense. A Stars player who's name escapes me at the moment absolutely crushed a sharks player in the corner that shattered the glass all over a puck bunny in the zamboni lane in the first period. I was sitting 7 rows back from the spot that Morrow destroyed Michalek. One of the nastiest hits I have ever seen. The save that Nabakov made on Richards was absolutely unbelievable. The entire arena thought that the puck was in for good 10 seconds, when there was no horn we all started glancing back at the ice and everyone was thinking "how the **** did that not go in, there was no way he saved it." And then Marty Turco comes back 5 minutes later and makes a ridiculous kick save, he literally kicked his right leg a good 3 feet into the air to save it. By the 4th overtime, all of the kids/casual fans had left and the only ones left were the true die-hards. They actually started playing clips from slapshot on the jumbo-tron that had f-bombs and all sorts of other profanity in it, which really got the crowd going. The Stars came out and ended it 5 minutes later. A truly legendary game that I feel privileged to have witnessed.

I laughed and cried all at the same time after reading that.
