Countdown to the 2012 Draft

Post by dmiles2186 »

I'm not well versed on the prospects and we've got 10 days to get up to speed before the draft takes place. It's a bit different feel this year since the Blues made a step up, the draft doesn't seem to be such a focal point from a fan's perspective like it has in the past. Does Tim Bozon, probably not, have any relation to Philippe Bozon?

Edit: a little research answers my own question. Tim is Philippe's son.

mynhldraft.com has us getting this guy in the 1st round http://www.mynhldraft.com/2012/NHL-Draf ... t-Laughton and this guy in the 2nd round http://www.mynhldraft.com/2012/NHL-Draf ... val-Nieves but I truly believe the webmaster just pulls this stuff out of his ass when he's making projections.

I can understand a defense first team targeting a defenseman, but one with an obvious injury history? What was the story with his shoulder surgery? Major procedure? Minor stuff? Something that could have a long term effect on his physicality? Honestly, I'd prefer they go for the best available point producer. You can draft defense later on and develop them.

Agreed. Regardless of the team being defense first they still need to score goals. I honestly don't expect Halak/Elliott to perform the way they did again. I think they'll be good, but to think they'll perform that highly every season is kind of crazy. Maybe they've turned a corner in their careers but goalies can be weird; they can be your hero one day and the scapegoat the next.

The Blues have to beef up the scoring side and I really hope they focus on that. Tarasenko will hopefully help in that department, maybe Stewart will get back to his scoring ways (mayyyybe), and the "young" guys are a year older (again), but there's an awful lot of "hoping for the best". I really wish they could pick up one legit and proven scorer. I'm kind of veering away from the draft and just into offseason discussion but whatever, it's the same thing either way:

Draft: Get a scorer
Offseason: Get a scorer and a serviceable Dman

We just drafted two of the best offensive producers at our point in the draft last year.

And one of them was acquired for the highest rated Defensive prospect in our system.

For the precise reason it takes D-men more time and we haven't had a top 40 defensive draft pick in three years still with the team; we need to select one. No way should we be drafting another forward in the first round void of Dmen being picked clean. NO WAY.

Considering how young our D is and how many d-men are in the system just waiting for a spot to open up (Fairchild, Cole, Cundari, Shields, Hakanpaa and Ponich) I think there's no urgency to draft more defense this year. We need players who can score. The more, the merrier. We're deep at D, everyone knows it. But beyond Tarasenko and Schwartz, how much scoring do we have coming up the pike? McRae will probably make the team as a replacement for Scott Nichol but he won't score bundles of goals, and as great as Rattie was this season, we don't know if that will translate to the NHL in a couple seasons or if he'll go the way of Brett Sonne. Hell, we don't know that Tarasenko will work out either, or Schwartz. We need more offensive guns in the system.

After careful research... watching a few videos and reading some amateur scouting reports, I like this Pontus Aberg kid, he has a rocket of a shot and he's fast. Could do some damage playing the point on a power play or help set up some nifty odd man rushes. Martin Frk looks like he could be a good pick, except for his apparent lack of consistent motivation. Hitch couldn't get 25 to give two shits so I wonder if he'd be able to get a straight up rookie to work hard on a regular basis.

It would be nice if we could lucky with a couple picks.

Recipe for long term success: Draft well when you suck, and then get lucky in the draft a few times when you are good.

:deadhorse:

I'm almost sick of responding to this due to the sheer volume of people who keep saying this.

Why do we NEED another scorer? WHY? Tell me. First: We're not a team built around a prolific scorer. We score by committee and I don't think there's a darn thing wrong with that. A solid half (if not 7-8) of our forwards that we dress night in and night out are capable of, and have been for the most part, scoring 20+ goals a season. That's an incredible stat. Yes, everyone loves the Brett Hull and Pavel Bure types who just bury them at will but they're not exactly a dime a dozen and outside of the top 5 forwards selected in the draft the odds of picking one pretty much plummet.

Second: Didn't we JUST draft a guy who is supposed to be that type with the last name of Taraskeno? And Rattie had a sick year too. Schwartz has already had his NHL debut. I think we got very lucky these last two drafts at getting very talented players at low selections. I'd rather see how they come along for a year or two before going with another forward.

As for defense: Where is this "we're deep and everyone knows it" coming from? Fairchild has played a handful, I think Cole will develop into a reliable if unspectacular D-man and I haven't heard a darn thing about any of those other names getting ready to make a splash any time soon. Petro is the only one we have with any kind of a dominating presence with a close second coming to Polak when he lays down the hammer. Other than that, we rely on spectacularly average defensemen.

Hopefully our prospects system churns out some more D-men in a few years but, for the reasons I said above (plethora of young forwards, haven't drafted a top 40 D-man in three years still with the team), we need to pass on taking a forward in the first round this year.

If there was a solid D-man available by our pick in the 1st round with a huge upside, I don't think twice: I draft D.

Would someone tell Pierre McGuire to shut up and stop tipping picks? The guy protects information he gets between the benches because...who the crap knows why?...but he takes absolute pleasure in constantly giving away draft picks.

Blues go D-man, Jordan Schmaltz at 25. TSN has him ranked 38 overall. Anyone know about him?

I don't know anything about him, but if they're going to reach this much, they must see something they like. Given Armstrong's track-record, it's worth giving him the benefit of the doubt.
