3. Jordan Staal, C, Pittsburgh: This guy would attract plenty of attention. He is the best third-line centre in the league.
The Penguins are going to have to clear cash if they’re going to keep this team together. That could mean moving out a player like Staal because Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin aren’t going anywhere.
Several teams would like to make a pitch for Staal — including the Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues. The Sabres want to get bigger in the middle, which is why Derek Roy has been made available.
Staal is in the final year of his $4.5-million contract. The Pens have made it a priority to get Crosby’s deal done. Look for Staal to be dealt and there will be a lot of interest.

I'd rather have Parise given that there's no way they're adding TWO big contracts next season. Still have to get the books in order before they can make anything big happen. Even Parise is a stretch. More like a serviceable d-man in the $3 mil range and that's it.

Yeah probably like a Salvador like D-man.

Last I checked we have a plethora of 2nd and 3rd line forwards. And for the salary he would command? Hell no. Someone else can over-pay but I don't think we should be that team.
I would Salvador back in a heartbeat after his most recent playoff performance.

I think the 3 mill a year on a D-Man is pretty much dead on.
Easy rule of thumb this offseason....if 8 people on this site know his name, he's out of the Blues price range.
Sad but true. Salary cap hell is not a good place to be and we have a lot of young player contracts coming up that are going to be getting extensions. Not the time to go out and commit the franchise to an over-priced, long term contract.

This is the catch. 2012-13 is the final year of his current deal, so he is not going on the open market this off-season. They are talking about the Penguins trading him, because the Pens have to keep paying Cindy and Malkin and need to make room somewhere. His salary for the upcoming season is 4.5M.
Staal would be an ideal upgrade over Scott Nichol - who is likely gone being an unrestricted FA.

Here's an out of the box idea: Ryan Suter. Why? He's not a goal scorer, true, but he's a definite set-up man coming from a hardened playoff caliber team. Pair him up with a sniper or a playmaker (Tarasenko?) and he could be dynamite for us.
Or am I overreaching?

Why would Staal reject a 10 year offer? Can you lowball someone with a 10 year offer??
He must not like playing in the shadow of Malkin and Crosby or something... because I always thought that Pittsburgh was considered one of the better teams to play for.

Well he is Pittsburghs 3rd line Center...don't blame him for wanting to go some place else to be a #1 or #2.

I think the Penguins dominated this trade hands down.
They clear significant cap room, acquire a VERY talented player in Sutter, a prospect AND an 8th overall pick to boot? Man...
