Our Goals Against

Post by cprice12 »

I know there is always a lot of talk about the "homestand from hell", but I never ran the numbers until now.

Right now we have a 2.48 GAA, which is 12th in the NHL (it was much, much worse before Elliott returned to form over the last 9 games). I wish I had run the numbers 10 games ago, I think we were near the bottom of the league in GAA.

So... if you take away the 5-game "homestand from hell", where we allowed 26 goals in those 5 games... we'd have a 2.10 GAA right now, which would be good 3rd in the NHL...and maybe even better if we replay those 5 games.

Crazy how much that horrible 5 game stretch skewed the numbers for the entire season...granted, it's only a half season this year, but still.

Since the deadline, we have a 1.2 GAA. Obviously Bouwmeester will be here next year, but if I were Army, I would seriously be considering resigning Leopold as well. He has been as solid as you can get. I can only remember one glaring error of his since he has been playing here, and that didn't end up in a goal against.

Bouwmeester - Petro
Leopold - Shattenirk
Jackman - Polak

Russel
Cole

Is there a better D corps in the league right now?

Agreed, but we already weren't going to be able to resign Petro, Shatty, Bergie, and Stewart. And that was before taking on Bouw's 6.6 next year.

Unless ownership GREATLY increases payroll next year.....a few things are going to have to go.

Now......if Petro is willing to sign a low two year deal coming off a poor year and you could unload Halak's deal and maybe Perron, then we could talk about resigning everyone.

The Blues are increasing ticket prices next year and that could amount to as much a 5 -6 mill in extra revenue. Even if they decided to put every dime back into salary, that doesn't even cover Bouw's contract next year.

Tight budget, and Hitch's love of Russell suggests that Leopold will not be back. I agree with your opinion that he's played very well and I'd love to have him back, I just don't think there is really any likelihood of that happening.

While Petro is a rfa next season, he will get offered a mega contract by someone. Quality dmen are to hard to find via draft.

Same thing goes for shattenkirk.

I don't think he will get offered a mega contract because I don't think the Blues will let it go that far.
But if it does come to that, I think the Blues need to seriously consider letting him take that contract because if it's for crazy money, the Blues will have a truckload of 1st round picks coming back their way.
It also should be noted that Petro has regressed quite a bit this year...not that this is indicative of how his career will be, but still.

Now... I really do hope the Blues sign Petro (they will) and he is here for a long time as he is still very young and his best years are obviously ahead of him.
His downturn in play should result in a cheaper contract for the Blues...so we'll see.

My guess is the Blues get a contract done well before offer sheets are allowed.
I'm guessing, based on what the rest of the guys on the team make, that he resigns for no more than $5 million per...and frankly, based on his play this year, he should be at around $4 million or less...but he'll get more than that.

I agree with Curt, I think Petro resigns for around 4-5 mill a year on a two year deal.

While he could get some 'nice' offers right now, it's nothing compared to what he'll command if he has another season or two like last year.

So he won't want to sign anything long term right now. Not with us and not with someone else....he's coming off a horrible year and his negotiating power is too low.
