Is somebody making a spot start so neither Waino or Miller have to go on short rest?

Not sure, the Cards website only had those listings and I haven't seen anything on Twitter about it.

They said on the pre-game that Joe Kelly gets Game 3's start.

Yeah, I heard that too. Hopefully he does well.

Yadi has been suspended for 1 game. I think the ejection was BS, and I think a suspension is pretty borderline. So, I was hoping the BS nature of the ejection would have pushed it in Yadi's favor. Oh well, he's appealing. And, if he loses, it's not the end of the world if he gets a day off. He's been overused thus far. Could possibly even be a blessing in disguise so long as it's not during the Cincinnati series.

I agree. I'd rather he take the game now against Arizona so he's back in time for our division opponent.

Lynn just wins ball games. It's crazy that he's off to another torrid start to this season. Danny Mac mentioned on the broadcast that since the start of last year, his 25 wins leads the major leagues, which kind of baffles me. And if Beltran keeps hitting this way, it's going to be hard for the Cards to let him walk in favor of Tavares once the season is done.

Tough loss last night. Had the winning run in scoring position multiple times and couldn't get him across. But, they fought back to make it a game, so I've got no complaints there.

Also, the draft starts today. I don't follow college/HS baseball to have any opinion on who we should take, but I keep hearing Tim Anderson and Sean Manaea mentioned as possible 1st round picks for us. We have the 19th and 28th picks.

I usually DVR the draft just so I can hear the MLB Network guys break down the players we draft. Otherwise, I'd never know anything about them. They had high praise for Wacha last year, hopefully the Birds land a couple of solid players in the 1st round tonight.

It's rare that I'm on here during a game, but holy cripes, what an offensive explosion in the 4th inning. Both dingers from Holliday and Adams were absolutely smoked.

Edit: right after i posted this, Descalso hit a 2 run bomb. 4th inning still going.

I had class tonight, so haven't see any highlights, but I heard Matt Adams hit a BOMB. Hopefully that heats him up. He hasn't been very good since coming off the DL.

Here's our first pick (19th overall).

Marco Gonzales

Rank: 14
Gonzaga, Junior
Height: 6'1", Weight: 185
Position: LHP
DOB: 2/16/1992
Bats: L, Throws: L
Twitter: @MarcoGonzales_
Previous: 2010, 29th (890) - COL

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Fastball: 5/5 | Curve: 5/6 | Changeup: 5/6 | Control: 5/6 | Overall: 5/6

A two-way player for Gonzaga, Gonzales' future will most certainly be on the mound, especially after an outstanding turn as part of Team USA's rotation over the summer.
Gonzales' best pitch is his changeup, which is an easily plus pitch. He'll throw his fastball up into the low 90s and has excellent command of it, while using a slider as his primary breaking ball.
After a very strong sophomore season on both sides of the ball, Gonzales kept it going for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team over the summer. He carried it over to his junior season, pitching and hitting well for the 'Zags. Clearly a very good athlete who can handle the bat, it's his left arm that could have him drafted in the first round in June.

MLB.com had him the #14 overall

Here's our second pick (28th overall):

Robert Kaminsky
Rank: 38
St. Joseph Regional HS (N.J.), Senior
Height: 6'0", Weight: 188
Position: LHP/OF
DOB: 9/2/1994
Bats: S, Throws: L
Twitter: @Kaminsky21
Commitment: UNC

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Fastball: 5/6 | Slider: 4/5 | Changeup: 4/5 | Control: 4/5 | Overall: 4/5

From a pure stuff standpoint, Kaminsky belongs in the group of top high school lefties in this class.
He has two plus pitches, with his fastball, thrown 92-95 mph, and a hard breaking ball. He has a good feel for his changeup, though he hasn't used it much in his high school career. He also has a pretty good idea of what he's doing on the mound, but he's not the biggest guy in the world, leading some to worry about durability.
Kaminsky also had to get past the stigma of being from the Northeast. His performance over the summer on the showcase circuit against the nation's top high school talent certainly helped with that, and he's more or less continued pitching like that this spring.

Before the draft somebody from Viva el Birdos said he would dance naked on the street if we drafted Kaminsky. Apparently he has the highest ceiling of any arm in the draft, but is small. My initial reaction is that he is a left handed shelby miller, but that's probably a bad comparison.

The MLB Network guys thought the Cards would go in different directions but ultimately graded them as solid picks. They mainly mentioned how they weren't traditional power arms, ultimately noting Miller and Wacha as recent picks. To me, it's one thing to draft a player with upside, but you have to have the right coaching up and down the system to bring them along. I think that's what sets the Cardinals apart from most teams.

I doubt we'll see these guys up as quick as Miller and Wacha, but definitely looking forward to seeing what they can do down the line.

Certainly not as fast as Wacha, although they are hoping Gonzales flies threw the system. I'm reading his ML "range" is a #3-#5 starter. Probably won't be a superstar, but should have good enough stuff to be a lefty in the rotation or at least a good LOOGY.

Kaminsky I'm hearing tons of praise for. He's small, which could be relevant. But, he's got some really sick stuff. He won't be here for a few years, but I'm really excited when he does get here. I heard him compared to a left handed Roy Oswalt. That doesn't really mean anything, but that's exciting if he can hit his perceived potential.

You mentioning Kaminsky's size, I went back and found this quote from Derrick Goold's Twitter feed: "#Cardinals pick Kaminsky on his 5-11 frame compared to towering pitchers: "I didn't know there was a certain height to get people out."

That's an awesome attitude to have.

Oscar Mercado (2nd round pick, SS out of HS), I'm hearing is ML ready defensively, but he definitely needs some work with his bat. I watched a highlight reel of him and he isn't quite there, or even close. But he's 18, so he has time to develop.

One HUGE plus though is that he projects as a SS in the majors. Tons of shortstops are drafted with the assumption they will have to change positions.
