Blues • A three-game road trip will open in Vancouver, where the Blues will be seeking just the second 4-0 start in franchise history, following the first time in 2013-14. The club has won two straight games at Rogers Arena and has a record of 9-4-2 on the Western Canadian swing (including Calgary and Edmonton) in the last three years. Paul Stastny enters the game with a team-high six points, including two goals and four assists.

Canucks • The Blues are the third opponent in a four-game homestand for Vancouver to open the season. The Canucks are 2-0 so far, with a 2-1 shootout victory over Calgary and a 4-3 overtime win over Carolina. In both games, Vancouver rallied from a third-period deficit and won, something the Canucks did only three times last season (3-15-3). They have five goals from five players, and their power play is zero for six.

Injuries • Blues —LW Jaden Schwartz (elbow), C Kyle Brodziak (upper-body) and D Carl Gunnarsson (upper-body), questionable; C Jori Lehtera, out. Canucks — LW Anton Rodin (knee), questionable; D Tom Nilsson (undisclosed), out.
The Vancouver Canucks will attempt to defy their critics again Tuesday night.

Experts, ranging from USA Today to ESPN to EA Sports, have predicted that the Canucks will finish last in the 30-team NHL this season. But Vancouver is unbeaten (2-0-0) in the young campaign heading into Tuesday's home date with the St. Louis Blues, who are also undefeated (3-0-0).

"I'd like to say (the fast start to the season) probably doesn't make a difference, but I do think it makes a difference," said Canucks coach Willie Desjardins. "It's hard if you go out and lose."

Vancouver, which is attempting to get back to the playoffs after missing the post-season in 2015-16, pulled off back-to-back wins Saturday and Sunday over the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes. In both cases, center Brandon Sutter, who missed most of last season with jaw and leg injuries, scored the winning goals.

The Canucks received points from a range of players in the first two games -- not just stars Daniel and Henrik Sedin, who were relied upon for most of the team's offense in the past.

Contrary to last season, Vancouver also displayed an ability to overcome deficits. It beat Carolina by scoring four unanswered goals after the Hurricanes built a 3-0 lead. The Canucks negated a 1-0 deficit in a 2-1 win over Calgary.

By comparison, Vancouver won only three of 34 games in which they trailed after two periods in 2015-16.

"To come from behind twice like that in our own rink is big, something that we didn't do very well last year," said Sutter, who also had an assist against Carolina. "It seemed like those close games at the start of the year last year, we ended up losing in overtime and shootouts."

But the chances of coming back against the Blues, a stingy defensive team, will be difficult at best, even though the visitors are battling early injuries. St. Louis allowed only six goals in its first three games -- two in each contest, to be precise -- while beating the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Blues scored 11 goals in the same span. Center Paul Stastny leads the way offensively with two goals and four assists, while winger Vladimir Tarasenko furnished three goals and two assists, and fellow winger Thomas Steen chipped in a goal and three helpers.

"Stastny and Steen are doing everything for us right now," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock. "They're killing all the penalties, they're on the power play, they're out against the top line, they're playing huge minutes. Both guys are carrying the day for us."

St. Louis will attempt to start a season 4-0 for only the second time in franchise history. It initially achieved the feat just three seasons ago, in 2013-14.

But even after starting the current campaign with three wins in four nights, the demanding Hitchcock wants to see better efforts from other players -- particularly forwards.

"We need more participants," said Hitchcock. "We need more people giving us better minutes up front. We just can't keep relying on the same two or three guys all the time."

Lineup changes are inevitable as Hitchcock deals with the team's injury situation. The Blues lost three players to upper-body injuries during the first two periods of Saturday night's win over the New York Rangers -- centers Kyle Brodziak and Jori Lehtera and defenseman Carl Gunarrasson.

Lehtera did not travel to Vancouver, while Brodziak and Gunnarsson are both listed as day-to-day. St. Louis elected not to call up any players from its AHL farm club in Chicago.

Meanwhile, winger Jaden Schwartz could make his regular-season debut for the Blues after suffering an elbow injury in the preseason. Schwartz, who signed a five-year, $26.75-million contract on July 15, is starting the season late for the second straight year. He missed the first 49 games in 2015-16 with a fractured left ankle.

The Canucks remained healthy through their first two games, although winger Anton Rodin has been sidelined with a sore knee since the preseason. The problem stems from a severed tendon which Rodin suffered last season while playing in Sweden. He underwent surgery to fix the problem but has been experiencing swelling and soreness.

Vancouver winger Jack Skille, who cracked the roster after a successful tryout in preseason, could make his debut for the Canucks. Skille is expected to replace forward Brendan Gaunce, who has not done anything overly exciting in the first two games.

Tuesday's game is the third of a four-game opening homestand for the Canucks, who are looking to make amends for a slow start last season -- and give their critics less material.
Calgary didn't really score any goals vs Vancouver. Louie Eriksson put one into his own empty net during a delayed penalty call. That being said, the Blues are the first playoff team from last season Vancouver has faced. The Canucks won't look pretty most of the game, but will have 4-5 shifts where they look unbeatable and score their goals. While the Sedins aren't scoring the goals, almost all of the goals happened after a strong Sedin shift. No other lines are generating any sustained pressure for the Canucks. Playing keep away from the Sedins, and of all people, Brandon Sutter will see the Blues win.

Hmm... No players called up from AHL. According to the pregame report, Schwartz "could" make his debut. As cool as that would be, don't rush it if it's not necessary. And at this point in the season, it's not necessary.

2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

I don't know why I always get nervous against Vancouver. They're not the team they used to be, but they still worry me.

If Brodziak can't go, they might play Jaskin at 4th line center per another STLToday article about Schwartz possible return .

Blues team scope

St. Louis will have to overcome three injuries when they attempt to start a season 4-0-0 for the second time in franchise history (2013-14). Defenseman Carl Gunnarsson and centers Jori Lehtera and Kyle Brodziak each left a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Saturday with upper body injuries and aren't expected to play in Vancouver. Lehtera was placed on injured reserve and is not with the Blues to begin a three-game road trip, and neither Gunnarsson nor Brodziak skated on Tuesday in Vancouver. "They are both moment to moment," coach Ken Hitchcock said. Ty Rattie likely will get a chance to play on the top line with Paul Stastny, who is second in the NHL with six points in three games, filling in on the right wing for Alexander Steen, who drops into Lehtera's spot as the second-line center. "He gets an opportunity to play a top-nine role and hopefully he takes advantage of it," Hitchcock said of Rattie, a 23-year-old playing his 27th NHL game after being a healthy scratch for the first three the season. Robert Bortuzzo replaces Gunnarsson and Dmitri Jaskin replaces Brodziak as the fourth line center. Bortuzzo and Jaskin each played the season opened but sat out the past two games.

Canucks team scope

Goalie Jacob Markstrom will get a surprise second-straight start after No.1 Ryan Miller arrived at Rogers Arena in the morning feeling "a little tight," according to coach Willie Desjardins. Miller did not practice with the team, but skated after with goalie coach Dan Cloutier. Desjardins said they would need to call in a goalie if Miller couldn't play and the nearby University of British Columbia later announced their goalie Matt Hewitt will dress as the emergency backup for the Canucks. "I don't think it's anything major," Desjardins said of Miller. "We don't want to push it right now." Markstrom, who won his first start of the season a 4-3 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday after Miller won the season opener on Saturday, is used to filling in on short notice, including a surprise start for Team Sweden at the recent World Cup of Hockey after starter Henrik Lundqvist got sick in the morning. "That's part of the job, you always have to prepare like you are playing every game day," said Markstrom, who made 27 saves in a 2-1 win over Team Russia after Lundqvist couldn't play. "Nothing changes for me. I try to prepare the same way and do the same stuff if I was backing up."

Blues projected lineup

Robby Fabbri -- Paul Stastny -- Ty Rattie
David Perron -- Alexander Steen -- Vladimir Tarasenko
Magnus Paajarvi -- Patrik Berglund -- Nail Yakupov
Scottie Upshall -- Dmitrij Jaskin -- Ryan Reaves

Jay Bouwmeester -- Alex Pietrangelo
Robert Bortuzzo -- Kevin Shattenkirk
Joel Edmundson -- Colton Parayko

Jake Allen
Carter Hutton

Scratched: none
Injured: Jaden Schwartz (elbow), Carl Gunnarsson (upper body), Jori Lehtera (upper body), Kyle Brodziak (upper body)

Canucks projected lineup

Daniel Sedin -- Henrik Sedin -- Loui Eriksson
Sven Baertschi -- Bo Horvat -- Jack Skille
Markus Granlund -- Brandon Sutter -- Jannik Hansen
Alexandre Burrows -- Brendan Gaunce -- Derek Dorsett

Alexander Edler -- Christopher Tanev
Ben Hutton -- Erik Gudbranson
Luca Sbisa -- Philip Larsen

Jacob Markstrom
Ryan Miller

Scratched: Jake Virtanen, Nikita Tryamkin, Alex Biega
Injured: Anton Rodin (knee), Tom Nilsson (undisclosed)

Status report

Schwartz, who returned to practice Monday for the first time since sustaining a hyperextended left elbow during practice Sept. 29, won't play Tuesday but may play on the road trip. "He's close," coach Ken Hitchcock said. … Allen is back in goal for St. Louis after backing up Hutton, who made 33 saves on Saturday. Skille will play his first game of the season after earning a contract during a professional tryout, starting on the second line with Horvat and Baertschi. "I'll bring speed, north-south game and drive the net when I can and play smart defensive hockey," Skille said.

Who's hot

Stastny has two goals and six points in three games on the Blues first line. ... Tarasenko has three goals and five points in three games on the second. … Sutter, who only played 20 games in his first season with the Canucks because of injuries, has a goal and an assist in his first two games, scoring in overtime on Sunday after scoring the only goal in the shootout for a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Let me get this straight: Ty Rattie, who is continuously non-verbally disrespected by Hitchcock, magically slips into 1st line detail because of some injuries, but Tarasenko is hanging out on the 2nd line? I switch Rattie and Tarasenko right now. Vlad and Fabbri should be on the same line and Rattie with Steen would be productive as well.

This early penalty will be a test for The Blues. They've looked fairly good, so far.

Super save by Allen! Keeps it scoreless.

Nice kill! Now Blues go on the PP!

Sbisa definitely had a kicking motion on that so-called "goal". So. it doesn't count. But Upon review, the refs saw a hook by a Blues' defender that I don't believe would have otherwise been called, as I don't remember seeing a ref's arm go up.

Yakupov played well at the end of the PP to keep the puck and he got off a nice shot.

Decent period by The Blues, but they're lucky to still be tied.

Steen has been feisty, but they need to avoid taking so many penalties.

The Blues have been lucky after tiring and getting hemmed in in their zone.

They need to hang on and get out of The 2nd with the 1-0 lead.

Nice stick play by Yakupov streaking back on the backcheck to break up a 2 on 1 feed that might have allowed The Canucks to tie it up! His overall play is getting better by the minute!
