I find it difficult to believe Tampa was even in the picture given their cap situation.

They have the space right now for a 6M contract. But moving forward, they would have to clear 6.6M if Stamkos returns and it would put them in a serious bind next season with RFAs Tyler Johnson, Drouin, and Palat who are all key pieces to their team.

With Hedman's new contract kicking in next season, Tampa would have 7M in cap space to re-sign 7 RFAs including Johnson, Palat, and Drouin while also replacing a goaltender and 2 defenseman were they to take on Shattenkirk at 6M per year. That's just not realistic. Even if they traded Johnson, Drouin, or Palat (doubt they would trade more than one of them), two of them are getting paid at least 4M per which two, Johnson and Palat, are already being paid. So raise that number for each of them.

It just doesn't make sense - especially after tonight with TB losing to Calgary. Yes, they were on a run, but is it realistic to expect them to win anything without Stamkos and Callahan??

Interesting article - I put the link and text below. Surprised he turned down a long term deal. He and his agent must think he can get more in the offseason - guessing he's looking for $8M per for 7 years = $56M. Still, turning down $42M that secures your future for life and gets you 7 more years in the NHL is nothing to sneeze at. I'm guessing he'll be the prized blue liner in the offseason. Remember Brian Campbell in summer 2008? Same thing here.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/hockey/p ... a2c29.html

The Blues had a trade in place that would have sent Kevin Shattenkirk to a club with a long-term extension, but the defenseman nixed the deal, the Post-Dispatch has learned.

Discussions between the Blues and another club fell apart about six weeks ago on a trade that would have given Shattenkirk a seven-year, $42 million contract ($6 million AAV), as first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie. League sources have independently confirmed that Shattenkirk, who is 28 and a pending unrestricted free agent, turned down the offer.

The Blues are now believed to be shopping Shattenkirk as a “rental” player, according to those sources, meaning they don’t expect him to sign a long-term deal with another club before the NHL trade deadline Wednesday. An extension elsewhere would allow the Blues to maximize his trade value, whereas being dealt as a rental will not garner the team as much in return.

The Post-Dispatch reached Jordan Neumann, Shattenkirk’s agent, Thursday night but he declined comment. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong was unavailable.

The swap of Shattenkirk would have been with an Eastern Conference team and is believed to be the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom the Blues have long been speculated to be in trade talks.

It’s not known what the Blues might have received in return for their top puck-moving defenseman, who in seven years in St. Louis has 258 points in 424 games and ranks second on the team with 42 points this season.

This is believed to be at least the second trade proposal the Blues have had within the last year that Shattenkirk has vetoed. He also turned down a potential deal to Edmonton last June that would have yielded forward Taylor Hall, according to league sources. Hall was eventually dealt to New Jersey for defenseman Adam Larsson.

Shattenkirk does not have a no-trade clause in his four-year, $17 million contract ($4.25 million AAV) that is set to expire on June 30. But essentially he does have one because for the Blues to find a trade partner willing to give them the return they’re seeking, he would have to agree to the long-term extension with the other club before a deal could be consummated.

Under those circumstances, the Blues would perhaps be able to land an established NHL player. In addition to Hall, when he was with the Oilers, they’ve been linked to Lightning players such as Jonathan Drouin and Tyler Johnson. But as a rental, Shattenkirk’s worth on the trade market has been speculated as a first-round pick, a top prospect and perhaps lesser-tier NHL player.

The Blues have less than a week to find a deal before the deadline. The chances of them re-signing the defenseman to stay here are remote, but the option does exist of keeping him for the remainder of the season at the risk of losing him to free agency this summer.

Shatty is really dicking the Blues over. He's de facto picking the team he'll accept a trade to which will destroy his value since I think there's only one team he'll go to at the end of the day. We'll be lucky to get a prospect and pick from the weak Rangers system.

I think he's holding out for a bidding war in the offseason. None of these guys ever seem to think about the team they're leaving and making sure they don't leave a mess in their wake. It's all about the almighty dollar.

Definitely, but it's hard to criticize them. It's a business. The team is going to look out for themselves and the players for themselves. Just how it works. I don't really like the impact it might have on the Blues, but I don't hold it against Shattenkirk either. Just is what it is.

Apparently Bergie is looking to extend with the Blues... frikkin' fantastic. How does a guy like Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull or Mark Messier play for multiple teams in his career and a guy like Berglund is poised to be a one team lifer?

Exactly right. And if I were him and his agent I'd probably turn down the 7 year $42 million a year too. Some GM is going to lose their mind this summer and he's going to command $7.5 a year or higher for 7-8 years. You heard it here first.

As for the Edmonton trade talk if that's true I wanna puke. My opinion had always been Chiarelli wouldn't want to part with a piece like Hall unless he was getting a young defenseman with multiple years still left on his deal, which Larsson fit and Shatty didn't. If he would've taken Shatty for Hall straight up, Army should be shanked.

I don't blame Shatty in the slightest for turning down long term extensions at this stage. He wants to get to July 1. And he'll make a bankroll in the process. The only incentive I can think of for him to sign a long term extension earlier is just on the off chance he gets seriously injured the next 2-3 months. Jaylon Smith. He stays healthy, or if its only a minor injury, he'll command way more than $6 mill average.

As for Jori Lehtera, really premature and poor decision to sign him to an extension so soon in his NHL career. No other team is going to do us any favors. If we're gonna trade him it's going to be in the Bryan Bickell type mold where the Blues surrender something with actual value (prospect or pick) in a bundle with Lehtera for a team to take on his contract.

It friggin' scares me when headlines like this start appearing:

"Shattenkirk Trade Getting Harder to Make"

Anyone else starting to get the feeling we're losing him in the summer and not at the trade deadline?

Army is as much to blame for this situation. What the hell was he doing shopping an east coast kid to Edmonton before anyone knew Edmonton wouldn't suck this season? That's the kind of place you trade someone to as a punishment, so why the hell would Shatty ever agree to an extension with a perennial losing team? It was, at the time, equivalent to trading a player to the Browns or the Phillies. The talks should have started with Boston, the Rangers and the Islanders last season and not wait until the last minute to try to squeeze a team. I'm sure they'll trade him, but I'm also sure the return will be pitiful compared to what we could have gotten last season.

In any event, I think Dunn is ready so there is that to look forward to in the post 22 era.

With every passing hour, yes. Rutherford just said on the radio a little bit ago he thinks it's "50/50, maybe 60/40" that he's traded. That's sickening.

Branch Rickey once said, "Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late." And here we are.

This is from a brand new twitter account. Claims to be a former player, coach, GM and VP. Not sure about credibility yet, but it's something to talk about.
https://twitter.com/InsiderIntel/status/835341928942211072 He also is giving some credence to the idea that Rangers (and Bruins) are only realistic destinations.

Gropp, LW prospect, is worth acquiring. Clendening - so what. Another RD to alternate with 41.

Clendening was part of a trade for Perron back in the day iirc and has bounced around the league abit. Gropp would be a nice prospect, but the Rags obviously didn't read the memo, we need a LEFT Dman, not a right lol. The second works for me.

So here's the REAL question: Why not just Sign & Trade Shatt to the Rags (Unless we'e waiting to hear what the Killer B's offer up first) and get a bigger deal out of it?

If Army screws this up, I expect no less than his head.

The Blues need forwards not defenseman, in particular a C to replace Lehtera. Vince Dunn, a left defenseman will be on the main club next season, I have no doubt.

Just go for it. It is 99.99% certain we are losing him, so why not get practically anything in return. If that return makes this team better next season, go on ahead, man.

EDIT: I should note that a lot of people mock this twitter account as pushing wild rumors that don't have any substance. So, take it for what it's worth.

Something I just noticed- once we trade Shattenkirk, there will be no American players on the Blues.

Neither here nor there, but a little amusing for a team smack in the middle of the country.

2/26/17 | 9:15AM: Bruce Garrioch writes that a sign and trade likely won't happen with Shattenkirk and that the "belief" is that he will sign with the Rangers next season. (Ottawa Sun)

Veteran hockey writer Jim Matheson tweeted "Folks in NY. Shattenkirk will play with Rangers long-term if traded. This is no rental so NYR would have to give up lots"
Hopefully that does not automatically mean a rental trade won't happen. But I'm sure the return will be lower than expected.
