A good kill, and finally some offense. Too bad Markstrom has been great all game.

Not a goal. Let this one get away.

I'm used to being let down by the Blues but this season is rough when after every mis-step we're referred to as "The defending Stanley Cup champions" adding extra salt to the failure of the night.

Markström won this game for The Canucks. He made a fantastic save on what should have been a 4-1 lead for The Blues. Had they scored then, The Blues probably would have gone on to a win.Portland Blues wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 11:01 pmThere's been at least 3 that "should" have gone in.![]()

Vancouver had some serious puck luck last night.
Vancouver goals:
1st goal - Petro's broken stick.
2nd goal - Where was the whistle? Puck was under Allen's glove. Canucks shoved his glove to knock it loose. Might have been worth a challenge, but that's a big risk in a 1-goal playoff game with Vancouver's PP if you lose. Later in the 3rd period, Markstrom had literally dropped a puck from his glove the moment the puck hit it, but the whistle went anyway. Seriously??
3rd goal - That was a good play by Virtanen
4th goal - the puck bounces off the linesman right to Motte or Dunn would have had that puck on the wall at center ice.
3 of 4 goals not necessarily attributed to skill. Yes, Allen allowed one bad goal, but that doesn't necessarily mean Binnington should be next. He couldn't stop breakaways either in his last start. Of course, both breakaway goals in this one were the results of "the hockey gods" IMO, so saying the Blues should stop allowing them probably isn't exactly fair.
Granted, ROR's goal was a bit of puck luck, also, with the double deflection off of Benn and Markstrom.
What bugged me was how they let up after the Canucks 2nd goal and didn't really turn it on again until the latter half of the 3rd period. They need to play a full game again - like Game 4. We'll see who winds up in net, but I don't see the goalie as being the issue when stuff like the above happens.
What Green was doing changing his lines - he basically waited for ROR to leave the ice and put Petterson and Hughes back out there every time ROR ended a shift. On their 3rd goal, Hughes, Petterson and company had only had one shift off. Green put Petterson, Hughes and company back on the ice after only one shift of rest, because ROR had just sat down. I find it interesting the Blues do better matching up when they don't have last change.
In terms of officiating, other than the early delay of game and ROR being tripped, almost all of the remaining calls were "head" fouls. Keep the sticks and elbows down. Can't blame this one on officiating (except that quick whistle for Markstrom and no whistle for Allen) since they let everything, except head fouls, go for both sides.

I was nearly pulling my hair out on those. Couldn't believe the Blues missed both (well yes I can). Especially on De la Rose's chance- if he had pump faked for even a fraction of a second, Markstrom would have been helpless down on the ice, and the Vancouver defender not close enough to do anything.flyingnote38 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 10:39 amnot to mention two incredible saves by Markstrom on wide open nets
