Ehhhhgh.... It's player movement I guess? Brouwer is solid I suppose...
Who's this Phoenix guy?

I don't really know what to make of it. I'm not overly familiar with Brouwer, but his numbers seem similar to Oshie's, and we're getting more on top of him. He clears some cap space as well. Dunno. Not very exciting, but I don't really hate it either I guess.

Brouwer is just as old as TJ, hasn't scored as much, and doesn't have the raw talent TJ has. He was a 7th round pick who has worked hard to stay in the league. He's a nice upgrade for the 3rd or 4th line, but Oshie is clearly the better player in this deal.
Hockey futures rates Copley as a 6.5 D... that's somewhere between a career back up and a journeyman started... but he's unlikely to hit that ceiling based on their analysis. I have no idea what to make of it. He's tall, athletic, and has a great deal to learn if he's ever going to be a serviceable NHL player. It looks like this is a long shot throw in - like that gross of bottle rockets you get with $10 worth of fireworks; it might be fun for a bit or you might not even use them.
The pick is meh... maybe it's flipped for something better.
From the return, this looks like a pure salary dump. I'm not sad to see TJ go. There is supposed to be bonafide speed and hands coming up the pipeline this year or next, and TJ isn't the future. For his money, I would rather pay someone else to fill his role.
I would not be shocked to find out that this is the first salvo in a minor remake of the top 9.

Absolutely a salary dump to make a better offer to Tarasenko. Brouwer slots in the 3rd line if they keep him. I'm inclined to think no. What this trade does besides dump salary is clear roster space for barbashev. I wouldn't be shocked to see brouwer moved again inside of a week.

Only other good thing with Brouwer is bringing a championship pedigree to the team.
3rd rounder was a toss-in.
Well... I've been begging for Army to make a move if for no other reason than to shake things up and he has now. Oshie wasn't my first pick but he was on the list. A bit sad to see him go but we had to make some trades.
I'd agree this trade looks more like a set up to something bigger.

Well, at least it's a move that will force the lines to change.
Concerns though.
Brouwer - 7th round pick (214th overall)
Copley - UDFA goalie
and a 3rd round pick
for
Oshie - 1st round (24th overall)
Granted, Brouwer's Corsi numbers are very similar to Oshie's and he does have Championship experience as previously mentioned, which is sorely missing from the current Blues roster.

I'm not mad IMO Brouwer makes up for Oshie as a second or third liner, would have liked a 2nd but a third is fine with a prospect and us only sending Oshie.
I see a second part to this though, the Blues said they were interested in getting a veteran back up to play in the wolves with Jordan in case what happened last year happens this year, they bring up a vet not Jordan. Copley isn't that guy, I say there is another move involving either Copley or Binnington and hopefully Berglund.
I really hope Fabbri, Rattie and Barbashev make this team and grow wings.

I would call this wishful thinking.
I think Army would be inclined to do more, but this offseason is a buyer's market and not a good one to try and move contracts for equivalent talent return.
Hawks so far haven't been able to move Sharp, so had to deal Saad instead. And as long as Dale Tallon has a job, they have an easy dumping ground for any and all bad contracts for preemo return.
Seriously doubt the Blues do much beyond this and resigning their own.

Saad wasn't tied to Sharp. Saad only would have worked on a bridge deal - which is something he promised he'd sign. But then he and his agent asked for a bridge deal the same that Kane and Toews just finished up - 6 years @ $6.5M per. No way is he worth that and Hawks had to deal him. Reports from Columbus is that he's still insisting on those numbers and hasn't signed yet there either. Good riddance

Frankly I'm just happy Armstrong did SOMEthing.
The return honestly isn't that bad. For all of Oshie's razzle-dazzle and ability to take/give body checks, his numbers have never been what I think the Blues were hoping they would be.
It moves a guy who's been part of the three playoff failures, brings in a guy with comparable numbers, comparable age, less cap hit, equal worth ethic, with a Stanley Cup ring.
Fine by me.
The more I contemplate this deal the more it doesn't bother me at all.

Forward T.J. Oshie was traded to the Washington Capitals by the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
The Blues received forward Troy Brouwer, goalie Pheonix Copley and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Oshie had 19 goals and 36 assists (55 points) last season, one season after setting NHL career highs with 21 goals, 39 assists and 60 points.
"T.J. is an outstanding skater with a tremendous skill set," Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said in a statement. "He is a powerful player and has consistent track record of production throughout his career in the NHL. We feel that he complements our core group nicely and can help us get to the next level in achieving our ultimate goal. We also want to thank Troy for his contributions to our organization on and off the ice and wish him well in St. Louis."
The 28-year-old had 310 points (110 goals) in 443 NHL games after being the 24th pick by St. Louis in the 2005 NHL Draft.
Brouwer, 29, had 21 goals and 22 assists (43 points) in 82 games last season. He has missed one game in four seasons since being traded to Washington by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011. He has 255 points (132 goals) in 531 NHL games.
Copley, 23, was 17-4-3 with a 2.17 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in 26 games with Hershey of the American Hockey League last season.
The Capitals on Wednesday signed forward Justin Williams to a two-year contract.

Body checks?
Oshie has been a pansy for a few years now. No more big hits. Not very aggressive. Always on his knees.
I'm glad he's gone.

Depressing. We essentially traded a star player for an inferior player. I would have liked to see a star-player for star-player, not a salary dump which it was this was. Star-players involved in package deals? No, thank you.
I wanted Oshie on the other end of a package deal, say Oshie, a prospect, and a draft pick for Malkin.

I split the Caps rumor topic into two topics...since the other one was three pages of rumors before a trade was announced.
This trade easily warranted it's own thread.

First reaction when I heard the Saad trade... "What morons. They [expletive] that up." With every passing few hours and the more and more I read/hear about it, and look at your cap situation... the more it seems like a smart move. The gamble, as always, is what kind of a player Saad becomes. Assuming he ultimately signs that kind of a deal with SOMEone (6 yrs, $6.5 per), it could be the worst contract evar or could be the steal of the century.
Time will well, as it so often does with these types of things. I still think Saad is going to become a phenomenal player but to ask for Johansen money... in a not quite as comparable situation... ehhh
Now if I was Brad Richards I would've offered to stay on board for $1 million bucks. Not sure what happened there...
