SABRES (8-9-1) at BLUES (12-6-1)

TV: MSG-B, BELL TV, FS-MW

Season series: The St. Louis Blues defeated the Buffalo Sabres twice last season, including a 3-0 victory in the most recent game Feb. 5 behind goalie Jake Allen's 23-save shutout. Forward Jori Lehtera's hat trick helped the Blues win 6-1 in St. Louis on Nov. 11, 2014. Blues forward Jaden Schwartz had a goal and three assists in two games.

Sabres team scope: Buffalo could get left wing Evander Kane (knee) back. Kane has been out of the lineup with an MCL injury to his left knee that was supposed to keep him sidelined 4-6 weeks; he's missed 10 games. Kane has been skating for days and took part in practice Wednesday wearing a knee brace without any pain. "I think you'll have a pretty good chance to see me in the lineup tomorrow so I'm looking forward to that," Kane said. Coach Dan Bylsma didn't confirm Kane's availability but called him a possibility after skating him with Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart. "[Kane] hasn't had a ton of contact in the two practices we've had, but I feel good about the way he's skating," Bylsma told The Buffalo News. Bylsma did confirm center Zemgus Girgensons (upper body) will miss the next two games and center Ryan O'Reilly had a maintenance day.

Blues team scope: St. Louis took the day off Wednesday and did not have an update on the status of Lehtera, who departed a 3-1 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets midway through the first period on Tuesday after taking a stick to the throat area from forward Brandon Saad. Lehtera was hospitalized as a result. "Hopefully he'll be alright," captain David Backes said. "Hopefully we won't me missing another high-end forward. Whatever happens, we've got to move forward. We've got another tough game on Thursday again." Coach Ken Hitchcock said rookie defenseman Colton Parayko is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Parayko left late in the third period Monday against the Winnipeg Jets and did not play in Columbus despite taking the pregame warmup.
Evander Kane has missed 55 games over the last two years, and his debut season with the Buffalo Sabres hasn't gone as planned after suffering another injury.

That's precisely the reason why the former 30-goal scorer is excited to be back earlier than anticipated.

The winger is expected to play for the first time in 11 games Thursday night as the visiting Sabres try to avoid dropping a seventh straight meeting with the St. Louis Blues.

Kane appeared in only 37 games for Winnipeg in 2014-15 because of various ailments ranging from a hand infection to a shoulder surgery that ended his season in February. The Jets dealt him to Buffalo (8-9-1) that same month in a seven-player deal, and the Sabres are hoping he'll be a big part of their rebuilding project.

A sprained MCL suffered Oct. 24 in a loss to New Jersey originally was expected to keep him out four to six weeks, but Kane is prepared to come back in about three after participating in practice Wednesday. He has one goal, two assists and a minus-5 rating while Buffalo has gone 2-6-0 in the games he's played.

"I think you'll probably have a good chance of seeing me in the lineup," Kane told the team's official website. "Things went well as I expected and like I said, I thought I had a chance to play on the trip and it looks like that's going to be the case."

Coach Dan Bylsma confirmed Kane is a good possibility to play in this contest and at Dallas on Saturday. The Stars dealt the Sabres their second straight loss, 3-1 on Tuesday.

Ryan O'Reilly has scored both of Buffalo's goals in those defeats, and the Sabres also could find it difficult to get chances against the physical Blues (12-6-1), whom they face again Monday at home.

"Big, heavy offensive zone, forwards forechecking - it's a big man's game and that's what they present," Bylsma said. "I don't think we've seen a team like that so far this year through the 18 games."

St. Louis has struggled lately, though, allowing 15 goals while dropping three of four. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored the lone goal in the first period in a 3-1 loss at Columbus on Tuesday that was the club's third game in four nights.

"We didn't have any energy, so I don't know what to chalk it up to," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "If you don't have any energy, you come in second place everywhere."

Brian Elliott made 35 saves, but it's likely Jake Allen will be back in net. Allen, who has a 1.91 goals-against average in 12 starts and one relief appearance, shut out the Sabres in his only start against them Feb. 5 to help St. Louis extend its series streak.

St. Louis won the other matchup last season 6-1 with Jori Lehtera recording the first hat trick of his career. Lehtera, though, is a game-time decision for this one after taking a high stick to the throat and leaving in the second period against Columbus.

It's unclear if Chad Johnson or rookie Linus Ullmark will get the start in net for Buffalo. Ullmark has a 2.07 GAA over his last six after losing to Dallas, and Johnson has stopped 70 of 73 shots over his last three appearances.

The Sabres will be without forward Zemgus Girgensons for at least the next two because of an upper-body injury.

Between the injuries and Buffalo on the upswing, I have a bad feeling about this game.

Sabres 3
Blues 0

Blues players likely not playing (or for sure not playing)

Stastny, Schwartz, Lehtera, Ott, Parayko

Replacements:

Upshall, Reaves/Welsh, Bortuzzo, Gomez, Paajarvi

Yeah, I'd say that's a step down with one exception. And interestingly, they replaced 3 centers with 1 center by moving guys around, although Backes is really a C more suited to playing on the wing.

Still say Ott broke something, it's just not being reported that way as they keep him day-to-day. It's been 2 weeks already.

Not expecting a win tonight, but still hoping for one.

Ott and Lehtera are both back in the lineup tonight.

Stastny also appears to be close to returning. He was asked if it would be a couple more weeks and he said, "I don't think so." So, maybe a week or so before he returns?

Good news there.

Parayko on the other hand...is too sore to play, according to Hitch.

See how much Shattenkirk means to The Blues PP, and even their overall offence? He has already scored 2 goals in a few games back, and been instrumental in adding jump to The Blues' offence. That's why the talk of trading him off for a good centre (who will likely NOT be an NHL Top 15 centre), is disturbing.

The Blues really got sloppy in the last 5+ minutes of the period. They'd better come back determined in The 2nd. Allen had some very good saves.

Bortuzzo in for parayko again for this game. So, Parayko's injury must be worse than we had thought. Was there a later report on that injury?

All Hitch said after practice today was that Parayko was 'too sore' to play. So it doesn't sound serious, but more like the nagging variety.

Again, The Blues are playing down to the competition, playing very sloppily on defence. Both Pietrangelo and Bouwmeester go after the puck carrier, and O'Reilly is left all alone in front of the net to score an easy goal.

But, actually, the goal wouldn't have been scored if Pääjärvi had moved in to cover the goal crease after seeing his 2 defencemen leave. That's why we call it a TEAM game. The Blues' team defence was very poor tonight.

2nd huge 5 on 3 kill by The Blues, thanks to Allen's great saves and some blocked shots! They've GOT to use the momentum from that to start playing with killer instinct, and win this game going away.
