KINGS (33-20-3) at BLUES (33-17-9)

TV: 8 p.m. ET; FS-W, FS-MW, NHL.TV

Season series: The Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues have split two games. Brian Elliott made 26 saves, and Alexander Steen and Troy Brouwer scored shootout goals, including Brouwer's game-winner in the seventh round of St. Louis' 2-1 win on Jan. 9. Jeff Carter had a goal and assist, and Jhonas Enroth made 24 saves in Los Angeles' 3-0 win on Nov. 3.

Kings team scope: Los Angeles has lost two in a row and will play the sixth of a season-long seven-game road trip. The Kings opened the trip with a 9-2 win at the Boston Bruins but have scored eight goals in the past four games, including one in the past two. "We're getting lots (of chances)," Kings coach Darryl Sutter told L.A. Kings Insider. "You've got to make sure that's in your foundation." The Kings assigned goalie Peter Budaj to Ontario of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. He played one game while Jonathan Quick was out with a lower-body injury. Quick played Tuesday in a 3-1 loss at the Washington Capitals and is expected to start. Center Anze Kopitar has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in the past nine games.

Blues team scope: Elliott will start a 16th consecutive game, which is an NHL career high. Elliott leads the NHL with a .933 save percentage and is 10-3-2 with a 1.67 goals-against average and .946 save percentage in 15 starts since Jake Allen was injured Jan. 8. "I'm not talking about the goalie," coach Ken Hitchcock said, not wanting to jinx the way Elliott's playing. "Write his number down, he plays next game. He'll be in on Thursday." The Blues are 5-1-1 in February but have scored two goals or fewer in five of those games. They've allowed one goal or fewer in five of the seven. St. Louis assigned forward Dmitrij Jaskin and goalie Pheonix Copley to Chicago of the American Hockey League on Wednesday and recalled goalie Jordan Binnington. Jaskin was a healthy scratch the past four games and did not have a point in the five previous games he played, and one goal in the past 14 games he played.
(AP) -- - Beating the Boston Bruins 9-2 in the first game of their longest road trip of the season was a statement victory for the Los Angeles Kings.

Since that dominating performance, plenty of questions have followed.

The Kings have lost three of their past four, scoring a total of seven goals in the process. Figuring out what's wrong is the focus as they face the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night before ending the trip Saturday in Nashville.

''We've done a lot of good things,'' defenseman Jake Muzzin said after a 3-1 loss to NHL-leading Washington on Tuesday. ''Maybe we scored too many goals in Boston, and now we're coming up a little short. We've just got to capitalize on some chances.''

Even though capitalizing when it counts is what the Kings are used to doing, the state of the road trip isn't so bad despite a 2-3-0 record. Aside from a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders, coach Darryl Sutter said his Kings have ''played as good as we can.''

Maybe playing so well against Boston and even scoring five in an overtime victory over the Rangers somehow altered Los Angeles' scoring touch. Norris Trophy candidate Drew Doughy wondered if the Kings ''wasted'' their goals in the Bruins and Rangers games.

A seven-goal blowout can also be chalked up as an aberration.

''That nine-goal game was something I've never witnessed as an L.A. King,'' Doughty said. ''Not that that was a fluke or anything like that, but that night the bounces were just going our way and we were playing good hockey. For the most part, we're going to win games 2-1 or 3-2 and we're happy with that. We'd like to be the highest-scoring team in the NHL, but we realize that it might not go that way.''

The Kings (33-20-3) are ninth in the league in scoring and have plenty of offensive talent in Doughty, centers Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter and wingers Milan Lucic and Tyler Toffoli. They're missing potent winger Marian Gaborik, who suffered an apparent knee injury early in Friday's game against the Rangers.

Los Angeles still has many core pieces from winning the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014, so players won't use injuries as an excuse. And even if the Kings are playing well, their once-sizable Pacific Division lead has shrunk to three points over Anaheim and four over San Jose.

''We're in the situation where we need to find points,'' captain Dustin Brown said. ''There's definitely areas we can improve on, so that's something we need to focus on in practice... They're not huge adjustments we need to make, but it's the little things this time of year that are hugely important.''

The Kings are 4-7-0 over the past several weeks, a rough patch that isn't cause for panic. But the lack of goals lately is troublesome.

''We've got to score,'' Doughty said. ''Guys on our team are getting a lot of chances where we're going to the net; we're doing the right things that create chances. But the bottom line we've got just to bear down and put them in. We've been struggling to score lately, and it's been hurting us.''

It could be tough to get untracked against the stingy Blues (33-17-9), who have surrendered 10 goals in seven games this month as their penalty kill has gone 31 for 32. They're allowing a Western Conference-low 2.29 goals per game this season.

They held the West's top offense to a season-low 18 shots Tuesday in a 2-1 overtime win over Dallas.

Brian Elliott made his 15th consecutive start, a span in which he's 10-3-2 with a 1.67 goals-against average.

''I think we're taking the momentum and the good feeling and that swagger we've had in the past that when we play our game nobody can beat us,'' Elliott said. ''I think having that attitude is huge for us.''

Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk netted the winner on the power play, and Jaden Schwartz scored his second goal in three games since missing nearly four months with a fractured ankle. St. Louis has won all three after losing four of six.

These teams have split two matchups this season, with each winning on the road. Elliott had 26 saves and stopped six of seven shootout attempts in a 2-1 victory Jan. 9 in the last meeting after shutting out the Kings in his previous two games against them.

Hmmm.... Kings struggling on the road with Quick out for a bit. Quick returns, but they lose to the team with the best record in hockey and the most goals scored per game (yes, Dallas has more total goals, but they've played more games). Blues are struggling scoring, but playing well defensively in terms of limiting quality chances. Elliott is handling the quality chances.

Blues offense is still not where it needs to be. IMO, this partially has to do with Pietrangelo being out, because Shattenkirk isn't as good when playing against top lines as Pietrangelo is in terms of being able to be solid on D and still make the clean offensive play. It seems like it's one or the other with Shattenkirk and he struggles in the D-zone when the pressure mounts. Or it appears that way.

2-1 game either way on a fluky game-winning goal - as seems to happen whenever these two teams meet.

Binnington called up so Allen is obviously not back yet. We need to score more than one goal in regulation, that's for sure.

2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

Great shot by Fabbri in close. He now has 15 goals, and should reach 20, based on his recent play.

The Blues lead, so, I can't complain. But, I'd like to have seen them score 2, with all those power plays. But, maybe that has tired out The Kings, and they'll wilt later in the game.

Good kill!

Lucky that the refs are making the right call to disallow the Kings' goal.

How did Stastny not flip it high over quick, with all that open net???

Too bad Fabbri didn't score on that breakaway. And great flurry by Tarasenko's line after that. Quick just robbed away at least 2 goals.

The Blues should have 3 goals by now, but are also lucky The Kings don't have any, given all those penalties they took.

They always have to give us stomach ulcers, trying to hold onto 1-0 leads. It would be nice if they could build up a comfortable lead in a few games.

The Blues have almost 2 minutes of 5 on 3. They had better score!

And yet, they lose faceoffs and lose races to the puck even with the extra player, and fritter away most of it!

I wish The Blues would get a killer instinct in my lifetime. They had the game handed back to them on a platter abd couldn't muster the energt to win puck races and puck battles with TWO extra men! I am thoroughly disgusted.

The Blues should have won this game in regulation, fairly easily (by more than 1 goal. I am sorely disappointed. They had better win this in OT. I don't want to see a shootout againt Quick, despite Kopitar and Gaborik both being out.

Had to listen to most of the third period and overtime on the radio, but it sounded like one hell of a finish. Can't say enough about they way Elliott has played. And two points against both Dallas and LA- it's been a good week.

Must. Score. More. Than. One. Goal. In. Regulation.

Glad they won.

Watching the game continues to raise the specter of Hitchcock's questionable offensive related coaching decisions.
1) Hitchcock says the Blues recent power play success is because of the 2nd unit.
2) Going into this game, the Blues were 0 for 4 with the 2 man advantage.
3) The Blues get almost a full 2 minutes of a 2-man advantage power play late in the 3rd period.
4) After the 1st unit generates good chances in over a minute of 2-man advantage power play and not scoring, Hitchcock calls timeout, keeping the 1st unit on the ice, which fails to score, and winds up getting called for a cheesy penalty.
5) If the 2nd unit is the reason for recent PP success, why did they get ZERO ice time during 5-on-3???? It's not like the 5-on-3 was short or had a timeout called in the midst of it.

Bad coaching decisions in relation to offense will cost this team in the playoffs.

If it wasnt for great goalie play, this team would be awful.
but... if the Blues had a good coach, they would be great.

That's kind of been the story with the offense. They'll have a great chance like that, but they don't put it where it can't be saved. And sure, that shot likely goes in most of the time, but when you are playing goalies like Quick, or really anyone in the playoffs...that puck needs to be put top shelf where Quick has zero chance.
