One thing I find that separates hockey fans from those of some other sports is that, for us, life is ultimately more important than the logo on the sweater. At the end of the day, none of us care one bit that Howe was a Wing, but that he was a legend of the game. RIP, Mr. Hockey.

I strangely thought for some reason that he would live forever.

Sad day.

Actually, Alan Ruck was just shy of age 30 when he wore that jersey and got it wet in the swimming pool etc.

Having said that, that still makes him young from my perspective

Yeah I told a friend that I was really sad, hearing about it today. They said "wasn't he a Wing?" I said Yeah, but he was a great man and the most important person to ever strap on a pair of skates.

He accomplished so much as a player, but my favorite stat:
With Hartford for the 1979-80 season, he scored 15 goals w/ 26 assists. He turned 52 years old in March of 1980. Just an absolute man's man.

Yeah great stat and very meaningful cause Hartford was in the NHL at that point so you know it's a true number and not some inflated stat as an WHA member. Just think the guy is 52 freaking years old and scoring more goals than some of our 3rd and 4th lines in the league today that are 24 years old and getting paid $4M a year.

To be fair...some of the 3rd liners today would have torn up the league back then and would likely be hall of famers today.
Different eras, different talent levels. Players are bigger, better, faster, stronger today.

Nevertheless, 52 and playing a full contact sport that requires a ton of stamina. No one would be able to do that now.

Agreed.
Sometimes players are ahead of their time, like Gretzky was...and the game has to catch up to them...which it always eventually does.
I think Chelios was like 48 when he last played in the NHL...so he got close.
But with how fast the game is now and how much more talented players are today than back then...I think that has more of an impact on no 50 years-olds playing than anything else. Today's game would just be too physically taxing on an older player.
Howe at 52 wouldn't be able to play in today's NHL either. That's not to take anything away from him, but that's just the way it would probably be.

I wasn't knocking anyone. Nor did I ever claim that I will be playing in men's leagues at 52. Just telling it like it is.
